Marlins Bullpen Implodes As Fish Lose Opener to the Astros, 7-5
Usually, I am not one to bash Fredi but I am so pissed off at him right now. What the hell was he thinking sending Wood back out for the 8th after he gave up the game tieing run in the 7th? Ricky went 9 innings a couple days ago and everybody was off yesterday. Why do you have a guy that did not look that good in the 7th go back out for the 8th?
I also want to know why he pinch hit for Volstad in the top of the 7th with a lead and nobody on base. Volstad was at 91 pitches and he had the 9-1-2 hitters coming up the next inning. He could have gone 7. Does Fredi not know that our bullpen sucks?
I also question taking Volstad out after 91 pitches. Yeah, he threw a lot last Time out, but he had an extra day's rest. Find the middle ground, Fredi.
Though I suppose it's always better to take a pitcher out too early than too late.
Question: Why did Gonzalez stay with reliever Tim Wood in the eighth inning after Wood had given up the tying run in the seventh and gave up leadoff hits to the first two batters in the eighth?
Answer: "We were trying to go Wood in the seventh, and if we had the lead, go with the Hopper (Burke Badenhop) in the eighth and Leo in the ninth," Gonzalez said. "We just can't keep using the Hopper every other day. You're going to run him into the ground. That was the plan, to get through the seventh with Woody and have the lead, and go with the Hopper and then Leo."
