Yes there are small sample size conclusions that can be made from this game. I think most of us realize that this won't be the last game that Maybin looks clueless in CF (and I'm a Maybin supporter).

It won't be the last and it won't be a once-a-month occurrence.

Sure, but one has to question the validity of any conclusion made.

It's natural to try to draw conclusions based on opening day, because we are all starved for discussion and analysis of what we actually watch, but if this game happened on a random Sunday in May, nobody draws any conclusions on it alone.

That, I think, os the problem with drawing any conclusions based on opening day. We naturally ascribe more importance to it, but it's just one of 162. It doesn't mean any more or less than any other game, and everyone has good and bad days.

This post is full of obvious.

I'll give Maybin the benefit of the doubt since he was facing Santana, but he if pulls that shit repeatedly in the next month, I start gon hating him.

It was one game. Johan was on the mound so even the best hitters may seem lost at the plate. Pitchers are generally ahead of hitters to start the season.

The one comment that really needs to be said is Gaby Sanchez looked awful on defense. He seemed to make no effort to stretch for the ball. I know he isn't supposed to be great defensively but he looked awful and I don't think he is going to be able to compensate that much with his bat.

Maybin didn't look good but its Johan and Citi field is hard to play fly balls in because of the wind. I don't expect that to be the norm.

I thought the fretting over him not stretching on the double play ball was overblown, because I really don't think it makes a difference on that type of play. As I said, the difference is almost imperceptible (like, 1/40th of a second).

As long as he's willing and able to stretch and reach for a ball that is thrown off line, he'll be fine.

I don't think he'll ever be a good defensive first baseman, but I think a lot was made about not too much yesterday with him.

                      This was fine, right?

The errors on the pitchers were plays where he did stretch and just couldn't quite get there, and that's going to happen.

The throw was off on that play so he had to stretch, but on the specific play I'm talking about was Hanley's throw from deep in the hole that was right on the money to 1st and he never stretched towards the ball which made the play even closer than it should have been.

It doesn't matter if the difference is 1/1000th of a second, stretch at first base get the ball into your glove quicker. It's something every single first baseman should do. It's common sense.

For someone like Gaby not to be doing this on atleast two occasions is rather annoying for fans watching and I'm sure just as annoying for the person throwing him the ball.

It's something he needs to work on apparently.

My point was I know bob felt very strongly that Gaby didn't have as bad a defensive day as most everyone else felt and that he would take issue with the post.

More importantly though I thought I was being clever and I actually laughed when I posted it and did not intend to offend anyone.

                            Apologize if I did though.

Absolutely, it's something he should be doing, because it might have an impact, however small, and the umpire might give him the benefit of the doubt, and whatever. I think the impact is about as minimal as things can get on the baseball field, but I do think he should do it on the off chance it makes a difference.

I just don't think it's something to make a big deal, and honestly, I bet we see him stretch for those throws from now on. I just think a couple of people were making a much bigger deal about it than needed to be.

The biggest mistake he made yesterday was on a play he did stretch for and just flat out dropped the ball. That's unacceptable. Stretching for a long throw is something he should do, and I hope he does. But I don't think it makes anything more than a minimal impact on the game.

It just bothers me since it was something that most people learned in like little league and I don't know about others but it just looks awkward if he is standing up straight to catch a ball at first on close plays.
