Florida Marlins: Brad Hand, lhp, Marlins
Shortstop Ozzie Martinez is moving up scouts' lists with a solid showing for Double-A Jacksonville, but perhaps more promising is the turnaround of Hand. A 2008 second-round pick out of high school, Hand had a mediocre pro debut last year with low Class A Greensboro and struggled at times with his location. This year Hand has been pounding the strike zone with greater frequency, having walked 2.9 batters per nine innings with a 3.33 ERA in 75 2/3 innings.
I prefer www.statcorner.com for batted ball data (babip and gb/fb/ld%'s) as minorleaguesplits sometimes is off in it's stats (But stat corner doesn't have lefty/righty, monthly, ect splits).
You can also calculate it yourself off of baseball-reference but it's a pain in the ass cuz you gotta take batter's faced (aka plate apperances) than subtract the fuck out of it
RV (work): Jim, what's your take on Brad Hand? He seems to be pitching very well with good strikeout numbers this year, and even last year, even though he didn't have a good year. He's still young, and seems to be rising. Is he a legit top prospect in scout's eyes?
Jim Shonerd: I've regretted that I never got to see him pitch in Greensboro last year. Seemed like he was invariably in the stands charting pitches every time I went. Anyway, he's got a good arm, with a low 90s fastball that can get up to 94 and his curve and change show plus potential. He's dropped his walk rate considerably this year (from 4.64 BB/9 last year to 2.83 this year), and he's been pretty hot lately, only two ER allowed in his last four starts.
