Let's just combine these the fact that the Marlins are after a left handed bench player, and Branyan is left handed, say their a potential match, and call it news"

I'd still rather use all resources, whether they're guaranteed or incentive based, on a starting pitcher to flesh out behind JJ/Nolasco and in front of Anibal and Miller/Volstad (the loser of those two spends some time in AAA).

Find a way to get that legitimate #3 starter, well, really the #2 because Nolasco is the perfect NL 3, and I think we're 90ish wins quite easily.
          Current Free Agents

          Bedard < - Injury concerns
Looper < - Not better than what we have
Livan < - Not better than what we have
Milton < - Not better than what we have
Moseley < - Not better than what we have
Pedro < - Injury concerns and old
Smoltz < - Injury concerns and old
          Wang < - Injury concerns
Washburn < - Safest to get 200 innings, but no upside

I don't see a # 2 there. Mainly due to injuries/age because Bedard and Smoltz certainly could do it if perfectly healthy. I'd imagine they each each 2-3 times more than what Branyan is going to get. Sheets did pull down $10 million, Penny/Pavano $7+ million, and even Vincente Padilla $5+ million. I'd rather have Branyan who is a lot less injury risk, than those three, and Washburn is simply going to get some money at some point.

Which leaves Pedro. He just wants to pitch it seems. Would he take say, $1 million and another $2.5 in incentives though?

            Middle of the order:

            Hanley
            Cantu
            Uggla
            Branyan
            Cody

I like the looks of it.

Also solid OBP and great power, so I'm okay with the K's.

The Marlins are "kicking the tires" on a number of left-handed hitters for a bench role, and Russell Branyan is one of them. But, contrary to a published report, two sources said the Marlins have NOT made an offer for the free agent first baseman.

"Not true," said one person close to the player.

Another source confirmed that, saying the Marlins have merely contacted Branyan's agent, as they have done with more than a few players, to gauge the situation. But no deal was ever offered.

The Marlins are looking for someone to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Ross Gload, who signed with the Phillies.

One player apparently out of the bench mix: former Marlin Alfredo Amezaga.

Amezaga, a switch-hitter who was non-tendered by the Marlins in November after missing most of last season with a knee injury, is reportedly nearing a minor-league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Marlins can also forget about a Kevin Gregg reunion. The reliever is reportedly closing in on a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.
