  • Rumor: Marlins Finalizing PR Series, May Move 2011 Series

Yep. It's time for the annual discussion of moving a Marlins/Mets series to Puerto Rico, though this time it appears more likely to occur. Based on information first reported by the New York Daily News and confirmed by a Marlins source, the Marlins are talking about moving one home series against the Mets next summer -- either in June or July -- to the island commonwealth.

It wouldn't be the Marlins' first trip to Puerto Rico. They visited San Juan in 2003 and 2004 to play the Montreal Expos in a pair of 3-game series. The Marlins are scheduled to host the Mets three times in 2010: May 13-16, June 28-30 and Sept. 21-22. The June series, a mid-summer, mid-week affair, is more than likely, the one under discussion.

A Marlins/Mets series in Puerto Rico was also discussed for last season but failed to materialize.

No way it is a weekend series. Marlins do pretty well during the weekend.

    I hate this though.

My Sports Admin professor was talking about this yesterday. Not specifically this but how MLB is testing out how well games do in Puerto Rico. Talking about how it did very well when the Expos played there and such.

It wasn't that successful. Near the end they were not drawing big crowds. The novelty wore off.

Why move a weekend series with one of the few teams that draws well? Makes no sense to me unless MLB is shtupping the Marlins a lot under the table

So after finally getting over a decade long hump to get the stadium we then outsource home games?

Sounds like a Marlins kind of move!

Haven't these rumors appeared in multiple previous years. It doesn't really have a baring on the Marlins even if they decide to outsource home games because the stadium is already in place. Outsource the Marlins games to Puerto Rico is just to test the market there for a potential move of another franchise or expansion. The only downside is marlins fans will miss out on a few home games that could be seen at the stadium. Having a series in Puerto Rico also adds awareness to the MLB on the island and is a way to expand fanbases for the entire league and get more people involved.
If this happens it isn't a bad move and marlins fans can't really complain about missing 3 games. This is to better promote the league, the marlins and explore potential markets.
