  • Sosnick hopes he stays here buuuuuuut, we already concluded after a 30 minute meeting that we will no longer listen to the Marlins on the subject because they wouldnt consider a fourth year, didn't we? Why even hold out that hope, then.

This is not meant to be answered

    • I'd rep Peter Gammons for using the word pitiable on twitter.

          • Back in November, speaking to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Josh Johnson's agent Matt Sosnick ruled out the chance of the Marlins signing his client long-term this winter:

"Based on our conversations, there's no chance of doing a long-term deal with the Marlins. We made it clear that it was going to be this year or it wasn't going to happen. It was now or never. And the Marlins agreed."

One issue at the time was the Marlins' unwillingness to add a fourth year, according to Sosnick. About a week later Marlins GM Michael Hill said publicly that Johnson would still open the 2010 season with his team.

A ray of hope surfaced on December 1st, when ESPN's Jayson Stark learned that the Marlins were still optimistic about signing Johnson (but they still didn't guarantee that fourth year). Later that day Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports suggested Johnson would accept a four-year, $42MM deal ($4MM more than Zack Greinke's deal). However, Sosnick said a few weeks later that Johnson would not sign a deal that did not "far exceed" Greinke's.

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro talked to Sosnick today. The agent sounded a bit more optimistic:

"We're doing everything we can to try to bridge the gap, and get a deal done. And we're wanting to do something that will keep J.J. in Florida for the long term."

Failing a long-term deal, the Marlins still need to hammer out a 2010 salary for Johnson as he enters his second arbitration year. Sticking with Greinke, he earned only $3.75MM in what would've been his second arb year. Cole Hamels will get $6.65MM. Scott Kazmir earned $6MM. Joe Blanton, who's been going year-to-year, earned $5.475MM. It will be interesting to see where Johnson lands; as a young ace in his second arb year he's in the same boat as Justin Verlander and Felix Hernandez.

            Sosnick; what a tool.

            • Hamels super 2, Kazmir and Blanton were healthy. So are Verlander and Felix which is why they'll bank.

None of those are comps besides Greinke. Greinke IS the comp. Throwing out the others way high salaries means two things, jack and shit. And jack left town.

              • Sosnick is really sounding retarded right now. He sounds like a guy that made a bluff in poker got called and is now trying to act like he wasn't bluffing.

                • Given that Sosnick's changing his tune, do people reconsider their initial assessments of the front office's approach?

                  • Given their past history of pretty much refusing to buy out arbi and free agent years when they had the opportunity and most likely player willingness(such as Cabrera), no.

                      What about Hanley?

The key is to get them to a club friendly contract which will fit their budget. What did cabrera sign with Detroit? Like 150 mil over 7 years or something? I'm hoping they eventually get it done, and I think it will. It's all a matter of getting him locked in at a price they can live with a work around. It seems like the sticking point is the 4th year... maybe they can work out some kind of vesting option like the Phils did with Halladay.

                      • They had to offer Hanley a contract or they had no chance of getting a stadium deal finalized. They had to show some kind of commitment. You will also realize they refused to give him a no trade clause.

What Cabrera signed with Detroit for is irrelevant. They didnt even attempt to buy out arbitration and free agent years as far as I know. It is possible they could of got him on a similar buyout to what Evan Longoria got from Tampa, although they $$ would of been a little higher most likely after 2005.

You know Hanley signed his extension after the stadium was approved right?

                          • Talks about the contract and the final vote for the stadium for at roughly the same time if memory serves.

Um no. The stadium was approved in March and the Hanley extension came out of nowhere in May.
