I agree with this completely.

But it makes good TV because assholes like me will get pissed and need to bitch about it somewhere. Thus making Keith Law relevant.

You almost cannot exist on TV without being militant. You have to be really good at what you do if you are going to exist in a gray area. I'm sure he was more flexible before he got where he is now, but now he's a character. And he has to play up that role.
