I don't know if it's ideal, but then again, nothing about this team or market is, when the window's there, go for it. If you make it on a small budget, it gives you carte blanche as a "genius" for at least 3 seasons. Otherwise there'd have been handwringing and heads rolling over the 2005 debacle.
The average baseball fan will not trust this franchise until that stadium is built. Sure on the playoffs, but again. Even if they keep all the bats, the team is doing dick unless Johnson, Nolasco, Volstad, Miller, West, and Anibal are awesome. Even with an innings eater. The SP needs to grow up fast for us to be a contender no matter the scenario.

I don't think losing Cantu and Hermida is a big deal. Losing Uggla would be though

then again, maybe we get some cool brohans when we trade them

imo it all depends on what we are getting back for the players moved. Uggla's second half has certainly helped his value compared to the early part or even beginning of the year. No I dont want him gone, I am sick of trading players after they develop for us. But, at the same time we need to consider what we will see in return for Uggla, Cantu, and even hermida (considering what freddy sanchez got it might be something useless, well not for hermida but for others).

Good news! Ross Gload wants to stay!

ATLANTA - Ross Gload did not want to leave any of the first three cities in which he played. Miami is no exception.

Eligible for free agency once the Marlins Get your Marlins Tickets now! decline a $2.6 million club option included in the two-year deal he signed with the Royals prior to 2008, Gload is hoping for a return engagement.

"This will be my first year where I'm leaving with some doubt," Gload said. "I've always anticipated as long as I do my job and play well, I'll be back. This year, if I play well it doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to be a Florida Marlin next year."

The Marlins would probably love to bring back Gload for around the $950,000 they're paying Wes Helms.
The left-handed hitting Gload set the single-season franchise record for pinch hits (20) and he's arguably the best defensive first baseman on the roster.

Gload wouldn't mind reprising the role and he's not intent on testing free agency. The Marlins have exclusive negotiating rights with him and their other free agents — Brendan Donnelly and Kiko Calero — until 15 days after the World Series. "I don't know how they feel," Gload said. "I've had a great time here. I love it here. I like Miami. I like the guys here. I'd like to at least explore [staying]."

The FO won't go for broke next yr. They want everything set up for the the opening of the new stadium. I'm open for Uggla leaving IF they put CC at 2b. Is he really a butcher at 2b? I never heard until now saying he is not a good defensive 2b. Cantu shouldn't be hard to replace. Gaby/Logan could get it done. I think we need to keep Ross for sure tho. I do hope we keep Gload as well giving us that lefty PH off the bench.

However we keep talking about the Lineup yet our backend of the bullpen is a giant thorn in our ass.

Who from the minors is in the mix for next season? Morrison and Stanton are still a year off?

Besides the obvious Maybin/Gaby types, I would say summer for Morrison and Petersen. I think Stanton, Dominguez, and Cousins are 2011 summer call ups earliest. You also have the bench OF types like Raynor, De Aza, and Jai around. That's pretty much it.

As for pitchers, the huge allotment of relievers from Wood, Leroux, to Tucker, Voss, Parcell, Buente, maybe Owens, and really another 5-7 guys. Maybe Sanabia, Rosario, Cishek, or someone destroy Jax and get up quick. There is Winters too coming off injury. He'd have to be our "7th starter" as of right now, assuming a RVH pen conversion.

And I suspect Uggla is going to bring back something good for the mound that will be close to MLB ready.

tj, what makes you think ceda in 2012? we'd be looking at a supposedly lights out reliever with a history of injuries and not taking care of himself not arriving until he's 25. i think if he's not up before 2012 he's not going to be anything in 2012. what are your thoughts?

I just said 2012 cause that is gonna be the final year we would see him. 2010 he will be working his way back and IF there is a spot open and he is throwing good we could see him in 2011.

So I received a pretty interesting e-mail today since I haven't renewed and I basically threw it at David Samson and the negative PR department's feet.

Apparently, they're approving a $45 million payroll for next season...we shall see.

I think this was would dramatically effect the bullpen and bench. Here's a hypothetical.

                          C John Baker $415,000
                          1B Gaby Sanchez $405,000
                          2B Chris Coghlan $410,000
                          3B Jorge Cantu $6,000,000
                          SS Hanley Ramirez $7,000,000
                          LF Brett Carroll $405,000
                          CF Cameron Maybin $405,000
                          RF Cody Ross $4,200,000
                          B Emilio Bonifacio $415,000
                          B Wes Helms $950,000
                          B Ronny Paulino $900,000
                          B Veteran 1B/LF $1,500,000
                          B Ross Gload $1,250,000

                          SP Josh Johnson $5,500,000
                          SP Ricky Nolasco $4,250,000
                          SP Andrew Miller $2,000,000
                          SP Chris Volstad $415,000
                          SP Anibal Sanchez $1,200,000
                          RP Leo Nunez $2,000,000
                          RP Matt Lindstrom $1,650,000
                          RP Dan Meyer $415,000
                          RP Rick Vanden Hurk $415,000
                          RP Brian Sanches $415,000
                          RP Burke Badenhop $415,000
                          RP LOOGY $2,000,000

                          $44,930,000

AAA - West (or Volstad. Whoever. Or throw them in the pen and keep Badenhop down or move RVH elsewhere), Morrison, Petersen, Wood, Leroux, Tucker, Winters

                          R Maybin CF
                          L Coghlan 2B/LF
                          R Hanley SS
                          R Cantu 3B
                          L Baker C
                          R Ross LF/RF
                          R G. Sanchez 1B / L Veteran 1B/LF
                          R Carroll RF / S Bonifacio 2B

Lineup is more than solid, and the bullpen would be very deep replacing Pinto with a legit LOOGY and keeping both Nunez/Lindstrom.

Then 2011 (in a perfect world and ignoring what we'd get back in trades)

                          C John Baker $420,000
                          1B Logan Morrison $410,000
                          2B Chris Coghlan $420,000
                          3B Matt Dominguez $410,000
                          SS Hanley Ramirez $11,000,000
                          LF Bryan Petersen $410,000
                          CF Cameron Maybin $420,000
                          RF Mike Stanton $410,000
                          B Emilio Bonifacio $420,000
                          B Brett Hayes $410,000
                          B Gaby Sanchez $420,000
                          B Ross Gload/Veteran $1,250,000
                          B “Veteran Bat” $2,000,000

                          SP Josh Johnson $8,000,000
                          SP Ricky Nolasco $7,500,000

$45 million would be awesome (it's kind of pathetic to be excited over a $45 million payroll, but whatever).

I'd hope the extra $ would go towards ensuring one of Carroll or Sanchez can be used as a bench player rather than a starter. Keep Cantu at 1B and use the extra $ to bring in a 3B on a 1-2 year deal. At least Carroll and a veteran bench bat/platoon partner would provide defense that Sanchez wouldn't, and if Carroll is platooned with the right guy the offense should be roughly equal to Sanchez's.

Sacrifice the LOOGY. If the team's in contention at the deadline, they can just pick up a LOOGY then, if they don't acquire one when trading off Uggla, Hermida, etc.

I'm still hoping Tank is healthy and can be a LOOGY. If he's healthy there's really no reason he can't be that LOOGY for us. He's shit against RHP but he can be a good LOOGY.

                              If healthy, of course.

This news is indeed intriguing. Right off the bat, like I mentioned in another thread, Eric Hinske has to be on the radar here. He can platoon and give the Marlins Cantu-like production at around $1-2M. That extra money can go into investing in a 3B option as well, if it can be done on the cheap ($5-6M range, low years).

Of course, the team could simply be rearing up for signing JJ long term.
