  • Offseason Discussion - Payroll/Random Blurbs

But outside of the payroll figure, there's nothing particularly noteworthy.
Word around the Marlins is significant offseason changes are likely coming, with some familiar faces to be jettisoned.

With Florida expected to keep payroll around $37 million
barring a surprising change in approach, the Marlins plan to dump Jeremy Hermida; believe they probably cannot afford Dan Uggla (though owner Jeffrey Loria likes him a lot, as one player said); and likely will not re-sign Nick Johnson unless he settles for a deal well below market value.

There's also talk from Marlins people that the team might not be able to afford Jorge Cantu, but that's in question. Josh Johnson, Ricky Nolasco, Uggla, Cantu, Cody Ross and Hermida headline the list of arbitration-eligible Marlins players. Some scuttlebutt:

There are mixed feelings internally about whether to move Chris Coghlan to second (if Uggla is dealt) or whether to keep him in left field. Some Marlins people have concerns about his defensive ability at second, where he played in the minors. The Marlins do not believe Coghlan would be a good fit at third base. ``Left field could be his best position -- he has taken to it,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

The Marlins would consider using Emilio Bonifacio at second base if Uggla is dealt. Bonifacio said second is his best position, but the Marlins must decide if he's good enough offensively to start. They also could trade for a cheap second baseman.

    • If Nick Johnson and/or Cantu aren't retained, the Marlins will give a long spring look to top first-base prospect Logan Morrison, who also can play left field. Gaby Sanchez is another option at first. If Cantu is traded, third-base options would include Wes Helms (will make $950,000 in 2010), Bonifacio (been there, done that) or a prospect acquired for Uggla or Cantu.

    • The Marlins could keep Cantu and stay slightly above this year's payroll if: they trade Uggla and Hermida; do not re-sign their top four potential free agents (Nick Johnson, Kiko Calero, Brendan Donnelly, Ross Gload); do not tender Alfredo Amezaga; and add nobody making more than $400,000 or so.

    • With a need for outfielders, there's internal support for keeping Ross, who could make $5 million. Cantu could make $6 million and Uggla $7 million.

    • If Coghlan stays in left, the rest of the outfield figures to be Cameron Maybin in center and Ross in right. Maybin has hit .265 since returning from Triple A. Top prospect Mike Stanton might be ready by next summer or 2011.

    • There's a good chance the 2010 rotation will come from the current group of starters -- Josh Johnson, Nolasco and five others competing for three spots (Chris Volstad, Anibal Sanchez, Andrew Miller, Sean West and Rick VandenHurk).

    • Gonzalez ``will wait until next year'' to decide whether Leo Nuñez or Matt Lindstrom will be the closer. ``Both can do it,'' he said.

When he has an awful game it always gets mentioned so I'll mention that Maybin looked good at the plate last night.

Daft, we can survive losing one of Cantu/Uggla/Ross/Hermida. We can be alright losing 2 of them, but if we cut ties with 3 of 4 or even all 4, next year's lineup is going to be brutal, especially if Coghlan stays in left and we bring in a .600 OPS for 2B.

Cantu/Uggla/Hermida is a huge part of our offensive production and when we lose them next year to be replaced with Maybin/Bonifacio/?, the offense is going to suck hard unless Hanley can hit 7 homeruns a game.

As easy as it is to rag on Hermida and Uggla because of the K's, they're 3-4 on the team in qualified batter's OBP, 1st and 3rd in total walks, 2nd and 7th in runs, and of course Uggla leads the team in homers and is 3rd in qualified slugging.

Shedding Uggla for quality, moving Coghlan to 2B and getting a "cheap" corner OF who can give you a .720-.750 OPS is a great idea. Keeping Coghlan in left and putting Bonifacio or a "cheap" 2B who gives you a .600-.650 OPS is a very poor idea when you consider we're asking Maybin to replace Hermida's .740 OPS which is certainly going to be an uphill battle. You're also asking Coghlan and Hanley to continue to be otherworldly. Not saying that's impossible, but counting on two guys to essentially race each other for the second half batting title and overall hits lead is a tad ambitious. And this is just talking about keeping pace with a playoff also ran. I know the pitching has to make an effort to be as bad in consecutive seasons, but what screams that a rebound is certain? JJ hit an innings wall, Nolasco sucked, Volstad sucked harder, and Anibal, the guy most want gone anyway, might be our second best starter.

I made a face at the comment "next year is going to be a complete disaster". No it won't. The FO will not allow a "complete disaster" next year with the new stadium in site.

Anyone up for some 2 week vacation bets from the site about our record next year? (even though we have no clue whether were going to lose 2, 3 or 4 of the names that were mentioned).

Just to clarify, a "complete disaster" is winning 55-65 games.

Well, no we're not going to win 55 games next year, that's nearly unfathomable, but saying that's not happening isn't going out on a limb, Daft.

I have no idea what the team will look like next season, but if we lose Uggla, Hermida, and one of Ross/Cantu we're probably not going to have a winning record. I don't know how you feel about the strategy we should have going into the new stadium, but scraping by as being screamingly mediocre really isn't a great way to get people excited for 2012.

What's more, it's really sad we're talking about it like this since this 2009 core, if enhanced with the select 2 or 3 free agents who'd take a 1 year deal (I'm thinking Smoltz/Pavano and a closer) has to be considered one of the top 3 teams in the National League.

$37 million is going to be tough

                    C John Baker $415,000
                    1B Gaby Sanchez $405,000
                    2B Chris Coghlan $410,000
                    3B Some kind of 3B ??????????
                    SS Hanley Ramirez $7,000,000
                    LF Brett Carroll $405,000
                    CF Cameron Maybin $405,000
                    RF Cody Ross $4,250,000
                    B Emilio Bonifacio $415,000
                    B Wes Helms $950,000
                    B Ronny Paulino $880,000
                    B Veteran 1B/LF ?????????
                    B Jai/De Aza/Raynor $405,000

                    SP Josh Johnson $5,500,000
                    SP Ricky Nolasco $4,250,000
                    SP Andrew Miller $2,000,000
                    SP Chris Volstad $415,000
                    SP Anibal Sanchez $1,000,000
                    RP Matt Lindstrom $1,600,000
                    RP Reynel Pinto $850,000
                    RP Dan Meyer $415,000
                    RP Rick Vanden Hurk $415,000
                    RP Brian Sanches $415,000
                    RP Burke Badenhop $415,000
                    RP Tim Wood $405,000

                    $33,620,000 + 2 players

3B and a bench 1B/LF is what is missing here and not in that payroll. They basically have $3.5 million to find that. I'm happy with giving Gaby/BC some starts, with the assumption a good 1B/LF veteran type can help them both and play the same amount of time. And we could also shift Coghlan to LF sometimes and play Bonifacio at 2B sometimes. That would be fine if it's once a week, and not four times a week. The 1B/LF should be easy to find, but I have no idea what they are going to do with 3B given the FA market and what's in the organization.

Also notice, West is in AAA right now. And god willingly Morrison and Petersen assault AAA April-June and fix any performance issues internally over the course of the season.

This would be trading - Uggla, Cantu, Nunez, Hermida, Amezaga, not resigning N. Johnson and Calero, releasing Proctor, and declining Gload's option.

I know it's chic to rip Lindstrom for his abilities at closer but Nunez wasnt immune to bad performances. I have no problem opening it back up.

                        Uggla .815
                        Cantu .783
                        Hermida .740
                        Bonifacio .615

                        Combo Cantu/Hermida - .765 (eyeball rounding) < - Maybin/Gaby/BC
                        Combo Uggla/Bonifacio - .750 (eyeball rounding) < - Whoever is new at 3B/Vet 1B/LF

Replaced. And team defense is going up everywhere with whatever arrangement they are going to have. This isn't a big deal. Will the offense improve? Probably not unless Maybin, Baker, or Coghlan all start hitting mid .800 OPS, but the offense won't get worse despite defections.

And the team would still hover .500 with this offense. THE KEY, which has been said about 1,000 times, is the team moves forward when the pitchers move forward. If JJ and Nolasco show up with 3.75 eras, and two of Volstad, West, Miller, and Anibal decide to throw low 4s over 180 innings and not low 5s, this team is going to be pretty damn good.

I understand your criticism of wanting an innings eater # 4 or 5, but that's still not making us a 92 win ball club. Those young pitchers need to figure their shit out and perform. The offense scoring 50 more runs a year doesn't mean shit if these guys don't go 4-5 innings. Sure, I'd like a $60 mil payroll also and to keep everyone while adding Smoltz/Pavano, but that's not going to happen.

And again, you build excitement for 2012, in 2011. It would be nice to immediately start to do it, but it's whatever until 2011 and that stadium is on the cusp of being completed. That's when attitudes really change. This isn't a big deal. Uggla, Cantu, Hermida, and Nunez are not part of the longterm future we're building towards. It doesn't matter if we get rid of them now, or post 2010.

Further, I don't know where this $37 number is coming from, but hopefully that is undercutting it a bit and it goes closer to $40 million so we can sneak Cantu back onto the club, which would make me feel a lot more comfortable.

                              At $45. Maybe.
