I don't get Samson; he's made it very clear over the last 9 years they've been here that not only do they not care about public opinion, they openly flaunt their indifference.

This is the same guy who criticized the Ichiro contract, who had neither subtle nor secretive conferences with the mayors of Las Vegas and San Antonio and who still disputed the deadspin figures even when faced with seemingly incontrovertible evidence of authenticity.

It would be one thing if we were an organization built around morals and character, or with a team first mentality that minimizes if not all together eliminates the mindset of singular importance, but that's not the case here; nor has it ever been with this ownership group.

Talk to anyone around the Marlins, and you will hear that left fielder Logan Morrison is the emerging leader of the club.

Morrison, 23, proved it twice recently, calling out Giants GM Brian Sabean for his comments about the Marlins’ Scott Cousins and then his own owner, Jeffrey Loria, for the team’s firing of hitting coach Dave Mallee.

Many of the younger Marlins were upset by the dismissal of Mallee, their former minor-league hitting coach. Morrison merely gave voice to their concerns, but both Loria and Marlins GM Larry Beinfest spoke to him about criticizing the owner.

Yet, Morrison is not backing down.

If anything, he found it curious that in his conversation with Loria, the owner linked Morrison’s reaction to the player’s loss of his father, Tom, last December.

“(Loria) said he’s not mad at me,” Morrison said. “He basically said that you’re an important part of this organization and you’re going to be for a long time, and that going through what I’ve gone through, he understands why I’d be mad.

“I didn’t understand what one thing would have to do with another, personal life and baseball. But I kind of went along with it.”

Some with the Marlins say a change in hitting coaches was necessary, that Mallee placed too strong an emphasis on hitting mechanics and too little on mental approach.

The bottom line: The Marlins indeed operate differently than most clubs, with Loria occasionally making impulsive decisions. It will be interesting to see how much dissent the team tolerates from Morrison, one of the top young hitters in the game.

“They talked to me about it and said I can’t call out the owner and say this is why he got fired,” Morrison said. “I really don’t understand what I did wrong. It was accurate. It wasn’t a lie.

“I still don’t understand it. But sometimes you do things you don’t understand. I won’t do it again, I guess.”

Well, Morrison at times might want to choose his words more carefully, but he shouldn’t hesitate to be honest. Baseball needs more players who actually speak their minds.

Marlins left fielder Logan Morrison has been told to tone down his comments by president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest after Morrison's reaction last week to the firing of hitting coach John Mallee.

Morrison said he was told he can't "point fingers at the owner, stuff like that," after he said it was not "right" and not "just" that Mallee was dismissed last Wednesday.

"I was like, 'OK,' ' Morrison said about the conversation. "I don't quite fully understand that because I didn't really say it in a negative way. I might have been written that way, I don't know. I was asked a question, I told the truth. But I guess I don't do that anymore."

Owner Jeffrey Loria also spoke to Morrison, but Morrison said Loria is cool.

"He's not really mad," Morrison said.

On the night of Mallee's firing Morrison also hinted the front office was putting pressure on the players. "Everybody has their finger on the panic button. It's hard to relax and play baseball," he said.

Several players were upset over Mallee's firing. The popular coach was in the organization for over 10 years, more than eight of those as the organizational hitting instructor before being promoted to the Marlins when Edwin Rodriguez replaced Fredi Gonzalez as the manager a year ago.

Morrison, 23, is the most outspoken player in the clubhouse. He is popular on Twitter with 35,138 followers and the Marlins already have told him to tone down his tweets after some inappropriate comments.
