Right-fielder Michael Stanton’s Arizona Fall League season is over. The Marlins shut him down because of a sore back.
“It’s nothing major. It’s just a sore back,” said Jim Fleming, the Marlins’ player development director.
Stanton, the Marlins’ top prospect, is expected to be ready and pain-free when spring training starts in February at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.
Stanton, 19, was leading all players in the AFL with a .478 batting average. He was replaced on the Mesa roster by Greg Burns.
Fleming said Stanton’s back got sore from “everyday wear and tear” and not on a specific play or swing. He went 3 for 4 in his last game on Thursday and was examined by a doctor after complaining about soreness the next day.
“He’s fine,” Fleming said of Stanton. “It’s precautionary. He just needed to be shut down.”
