Latest Fangraphs mock has us taking HS RHP Andrew Painter. They have us passing on Ford, which I can't see happening.

I want either Harry Ford at 16, and a college arm at 31, or Bachman/Wicks at 16 and Matheu Nelson at 31.

Yeah, Ford really does seem like a best case scenario, although I do like some of the other prep bats, too. I kind of just really want a bat, and in Barry Jackson's latest buzz column he says that seems to be what they're looking at. I understand you can always deal pitchers for bats, but it would be nice to see them draft and develop one.

If they do go Ford, I wonder if they'll still look for another catcher early. Ford may not be a catcher longterm, and if he is, he'll probably take some time. So I wonder if with the dearth of catching in the system if they'd still look at a college catcher like Nelson or Del Castillo in the 2nd if they're there.

Kiley McDaniel has them taking Ford in his latest mock, while Kieth Law has them taking Bubba Chandler. I’m starting to think Ford won’t be there as there’s some talk he could go high as an under slot guy. Chandler is someone who’s been tied to them more and more. He’s a two way player that more teams like at pitcher (Law says that’s where Miami likes him). If he’s the pick, I’d like to see him given a chance to do both to start as he’s an interesting switch hitting SS prospect as well.

you guys can feel free to start threads for each player or discuss the later-round players in this thread but let's try and avoid talking about other players in other draftees' threads if possible

Marlins up in 5. Adrian Del Castillo still available. I was against taking him with either of our first two picks but at this point I’d be all for it. Not sure if that would be a cost saving move though.

it means absolutely nothing until we see it converted into big league impact talent, but it's great to see us for 2 straight years, maybe 3 years, get rave reviews about our draft. Yet to translate to the big league level and the mlb draft is an enormous crapshoot, but at least the process seems to be top notch. I keep saying it but eventually if we continue to follow the correct process and don't hijack it because of an idiotic owner like loria, the results will come. Absolutely love how we have prioritized IFA and the draft with this new regime, something that was desperately lacking in the previous group for some reason.

2019 draft looks pretty bad right now. 2020 draft looks great, though.

I think the 2019 draft will end up looking really solid. To me Kameron misner is the wildcard. He fell in the draft after his last year in college didn't live up to the hype but his effectiveness stealing bases has been unreal so far in the minors at 29/30. If he can improve that hit tool a little that's a long term piece and either a BJ Upton type low OBP high steal decent power guy or, with another step with the bat, he can become a starling marte type guy with more speed, maybe a little less power, but similarly good in the #2 or #5 slot in a good lineup.

Burdick appears to be a steal, and the 4th rounder evan edwards was flipped for john curtiss who is not a special reliever but he is quality and 4th round picks are a crapshoot. Plus decent looking guys like JD Orr who looks like a brian miller clone and Troy Johnston who is lighting up A+.

It is just going to come down to whether bleday becomes what we thought he would and if misner or Burdick can translate their clear talents to the major league level.

Don't think 2019 is as good as last year and potentially this year, but it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, especially when compared to our previous regime's draft and draft strategies. if It doesn't work out so be it, the mlb draft is a crapshoot, but at least there is a coherent plan in every draft as opposed to loria's tenure of nonsense and penny pinching.
