I know u dont draft based on position need but u also don't draft 25 OF only guys-we already have a full OF in AA,Hi A,Low A and Rookie ball NOT counting the guys who will likely be moved there from MIF spots
IF DJ and Denbo think Austin Martin can play SS or even 3B the pick is fine especially since they have worked with Boras before
FG also updated their rankings and its crazy to see the HS talent they have lowered because no tape,signing issues and other stuff. I know their rankings arent a guide but if u have money to spend in Rds 4 and 5 u could get steal 1st Rd talent very easyLast edited by Nick; 05-27-2020, 10:43 AM.

I think the Orioles may well look at Lacy at the two spot. If he's goes there, the Marlins will definitely choose Martin in my eyes. 5-tool middle infielder would be too good to pass. I think everyone here would have chosen Martin over Bleday in last year's draft had he been available.
Martin intrigues me as a second baseman particularly. Unlike most, apparently, I have big concerns about I Diaz. I didn't like any part of his game last season. He would have to improve greatly just to achieve mediocrity ... and mediocre is not what Marlins should be looking for.
Still, with needs all over the diamond, I'd say 80% chance that Orioles take Martin and Marlins wind up with Lacy. All good.Last edited by Lee Stone; 05-27-2020, 10:32 AM.

I said if they think he is a CF then they might be better off passing.

Austin Martin,Osiris,Devers,Dalvy,Salas,Cappe,Nasim.Marin ez,Cristhian Martinez,Santos. Some nice IF talent

I stand corrected. He was playing CF this year. I guess I didn't catch any games where he did, though. He hadn't played there until 2020. He actually didn't play SS at all in college.
He played 3B most time in 2019 and then 12 in CF and 4 at 3B this year.
I dont think we would play him at SS but might as well try before putting him at 3BLast edited by tjfla; 05-27-2020, 10:50 AM.

Did you see this by Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs? https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2020-mock-draft-mach-one/

I haven't seen anyone say Martin is OF only. CF is a premium spot, so his move there is probably to maximize his value rather than limit it. At the very least he should be able to play 2B, and I don't see why he also couldn't play 3B. There are some that think he could even play SS. Also, with the DH inevitably coming, I think you worry a little less about position, and the log jam the Marlins have in the OF. And while they do have a lot of OF prospects, do they have a CF of the future currently? The jury is still out on that. If the Marlins pass on him, I think they'll be making a pretty big mistake.

Asa Lacy
Texas A&MLHP
Notes:
Plenty of sources believe scouting director DJ Svihlik would love for Martin to fall to Miami at No. 3. Svihlik, of course, has ties to Vanderbilt and took Martin’s teammate JJ Bleday just a year ago with the fourth overall pick. While Svihlik was with the program when Martin was being recruited, we still don’t believe the best pure hitter in the class will fall to this spot. In this situation, the Marlins will happily settle for the top-ranked pitcher in the class in Lacy.

They have us taking Lacy after Tork and Martin go 1-2.

They could go for Austin Martin or Asa Lacy and a bunch of FV 35+ guys which they have tons of right now in the system OR they could get a Garret Crochet,Patrick Bailey and 4 of the 6 picks be guys who in March we ranked in the Top 50 in ALL of the draft. This system needs high end talent and this is the draft to get it if u can afford guys

The 1 positive about this all is DJ and Denbo are running the draft/UDFA signings so we are in good hands. No more Stan Meek and Jeff looking at 4 statesLast edited by tjfla; 05-28-2020, 07:12 AM.

I think it's fair to ask, "How so?" What draft/UFDA results do they have for the Marlins thus far?

Jim Callis
@jimcallisMLB
My second attempt at projecting the
@MLBDraft
first round. Went with almost my same top 12 as two weeks ago, but was very close to mixing it up and going with this first four:
1. Det: Torkelson
2. Bal: Gonzales
3. Mia: Martin
4. KC: Lacy

I haven't seen it mentioned much, but I also think it'll be cool for Martin and Bleday to come up through the system together. You don't often get scenarios like that where two big time prospects from the same program come up in the same system. It's not that big of a deal, but it's still pretty cool to me. If they get Kumar Rocker next year as well, even better.

Here is Kieth Law's latest from the Athletic:
1. Detroit Tigers: Spencer Torkelson, 1B, Arizona State
This seems more solidly Torkelson than it did two weeks ago, although I still can’t rule out Austin Martin or Asa Lacy here, especially if the Tigers want to shop their bonus around and see if they can save to go over-slot in Round 2.
2. Baltimore Orioles: Austin Martin, 3B/OF, Vanderbilt
I still think it’s whichever of Torkelson or Martin doesn’t go No. 1, but there are some rumblings they would take Heston Kjerstad on a discount. I have heard a few times they won’t go with a pitcher here.
3. Miami Marlins: Asa Lacy, LHP, Texas A&M
If Lacy had had a full spring, he might have ended up at No. 1 overall; he was that dominant when he did pitch, including an outing in which he made Nick Gonzales “look like a little kid” in the words of one scout.
