    Hard sign here

    6'3 210

Baker’s fastball hovers between 88 to 91 mph, but his deceptive delivery still helps him miss bats. The 6-foot-3 righty has racked up 263 strikeouts over 222 innings, and his penchant for punchouts carried over to the competitive Cape Cod League last summer, where he struck out 31 batters in 31 innings and compiled a 2.38 ERA.

      Hope they can sign him.

There won’t be a fourth college season for Baker, who is turning pro after being selected Wednesday by the Marlins in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball draft, going 861st overall.

Baker will head to Miami Friday to meet with Marlins officials and learn where he will begin his pro career.

“He’s gonna move fast,” Maloney said. “It’s not going to take him long, because he knows how to pitch. When you start at the lower levels, guys have great arms, but don’t have pitchability. John has pitchability. The Marlins, in my opinion, got a steal.“I’m thrilled for him. There were teams that had him in the top 10 rounds. The way the draft works, sometimes it’s unfortunate, but he slipped. By the same token, the Marlins got someone who should’ve been a top-10 pick.”

Expecting to go higher, the anxiety level rose for Baker as the draft reached its third and final day.

“I’ve heard I was expected to be picked in the seventh or 12th round or something like that,” Baker said.
