Looking at Wright State's schedule, they played a pretty stacked out of conference schedule, a bunch of Top 25 and tourney teams, makes his numbers even more impressive.

A center fielder from Wright State University, Burdick is pretty athletic, and posted huge numbers in the Horizon League as a senior. He has big raw power, and at 6-foot, 210 pounds, he may end up in right field in pro ball.

Last week he was notified that he was a Second Team All-American for his part in Wright State's 42-17 season. Tuesday, Peyton Burdick's phone rang and it was the Miami Marlins informing him he'd been picked in the third round, the 82nd selection overall.

From a tight family in Clermont County, Burdick was ecstatic and his mother was crying. His brother, a Marine stationed in the Middle East who played with his younger sibling at Glen Este High School, joined the celebration by phone from a different time zone.


"I was a little surprised," Burdick said. "The draft is kind of a crazy thing. This morning I got a couple calls and everything just worked out. Everybody's up here right now. They're all going crazy."


Burdick is coming off a .407 season for the Raiders in the Horizon League where he blasted 15 homers and drove in 72 runs. He has yet to be informed by the Marlins where he'll begin, but his ready to fulfill a lifelong dream.

"We went down there for a workout and their stadium was unbelievable," Burdick said. "The Sunshine State, you can't beat it."


Burdick's numbers rose steadily at Wright State. As a freshman, he hit .289 with four homers and 31 RBI. By the next season, he was at .347 with nine round-trippers and 65 runs knocked in, making Horizon League First Team and First Team All-Region.


This season, sporting No. 88 for the Raiders, Burdick increased his strength, his numbers and his faith.


"I really invested in myself and my body," Burdick said. "My coaches helped me develop. It just changed who I am as a player. Finding my relationship with the Lord has also helped me to live a better lifestyle."


Burdick as a hard-hitting defensive back and wide receiver for Nick Ayers at Glen Este (now West Clermont) was listed at 5-10 and 185 pounds as a senior. Wright State listed him at 6-foot and a powerful 210 pounds.


Burdick and his older brother Tyler, were three-sport stars at Glen Este, earning more letters than a successful contestant on "Wheel of Fortune". Tyler was always a tad bigger, but each was the other's biggest supporter.


"If we wrestled right now, he'd probably know how to kill me since he's a Marine," Burdick joked. "I just got off the phone with him and he's happy for me. It's been our dream since we were little to play professional baseball."


Next on the agenda is the transition from the college aluminum bat to the traditional wood used in the pros. The Wright State right fielder is ready to barrel up some balls.


"I like hitting with wood," Burdick said. "There's a little bit of a difference. You've got to more precise when you're swinging in order to barrel the ball. I'm a physical guy so the wood bat plays in my favor a little bit."


Burdick is the son of Ty and Lori Burdick of Batavia.

Burdick vs Bleday (same competition in Cape Cod League last summer with Bleday 25% more plate appearances. Each with 5 HR, Burdick with 25 rbi to 15.

It is, but you're trying to spin these stats like Burdick is somehow better than Bleday by using rbis when all the other stats clearly favor Bleday. Not sure why you're anti-Bleday already.

I even made a similar point in the draft thread, how Burdick dominated this college season much like Bleday, just at a smaller school and lesser competition.

By no means spinning that Burdick is the better player. Just defending his ass to those who called his selection a money-saving move first and foremost (I read that in multiple draft reviews!)
