He's up here for a week until Straily and Chen get back because they needed an arm, thats not going to screw him up. And again, you exhaust all possibilities that a guy is a SP before you convert him to reliever. Its really not that hard of a concept to understand. Good SP's are infinitely more valuable than good RP's. Period. Merandy has done nothing but be successful as a SP in the minors and he's not doing it based off of being older than the competition. Whether his future is as a reliever is a different discussion, but you dont get into that discussion until you discover that all possible avenues towards being a SP are closed.

Its the same thing we're seeing with Jarlin. Is he more likely to be a long term SP or a long term RP. Probably RP, but that doesnt mean you put him there for the future until you are 100% certain he cant be a long term rotation piece.

Alcantara with another solid outing so far. 5 IP, only 1 run on a verdugo HR (one of the top hitting prospects in baseball), 5 k's and no walks. He's had really good outings and even though the numbers are good they are only like that because he has had a few rough innings as he's gotten deeper into games that have inflated his walk totals. Obviously that stamina is something he needs to work on to stick as a SP but still encouraging start to his marlins career. Id let him keep developing for another month then bring him up June 1 or around there along with Gallen.

Also, old LHP Sean Burnett has been pretty good in a limited sample for NOLA. Wouldnt mind seeing him up as our lefty out of the pen and let O'Grady go back down and work on things when he gets healthy.

      Another 1 bites the dust

Marlins right-hander Matt Givin expected to miss 12 months following Tommy John surgery

Was just named to Top 30 Prospects and looked great in the GCL last year. Not a surprise he has had elbow issues since Jan,tried the Chen method and figured TJ made more sense than plasma every few months

He should be back around May/June 2019 and still will just be 20

Like usual u are correct. They wouldn't send down Richards and DFA Cloyd to make room for 2 SP.

Or they move Richards to long man and send merandy down, or both of them go down if Despaigne comes back soon. either way, the marlins keeping him up doesnt make it the right move. Again, its really not a hard concept: you keep a guy as a SP as long as humanly possible.

Ya send Merandy down to AA to be a SP again and Richards to the pen to replace Merandy instead of just leaving Merandy as a 1 inning RP and Richards down to see if he can figure stuff out

Note on Gallen. He is NOT on the 40 man so if he does come up it won't be till later in the year(if at all). Graves and Elieser have to be on ML roster for certain amount of time as well

Merandy is a better prospect than Richards. Ideally, if the FO didnt fuck up and signed a veteran SP or 2 youd be giving both of them more minor league starts. Again, im not sure why this is a hard concept for you to understand or why you continue to act like Merandy needs to be moved to RP now just because its likely he winds up there in the future if it doesnt work out as a SP. SP's are infinitely more valuable than RP. You wait until a guy is 100% not a SP before moving him to RP. Really not that hard to understand. Just because a guy might be a RP down the line doesnt mean you have to move him there now.

This is the exact reason why we needed to sign guys like anibal, Nolasco, Hellickson, etc. You give these guys every possible oportunity to succeed as SP's and dont rush them to the majors just because there is a current spot open on the roster.

            - - - - - - - - - -

what possible benefit do the marlins get from moving merandy to a RP now before he has proven that he cant be a starter long term?

i dont have a huge problem with it if its just a short term thing until some guys get back because a week isnt a big deal and spending some time testing his stuff against ML hitting could have some benefits that he could work on once he goes back down, but if the plan is to have him up here long term as a RP rather than letting him develop as a starter in the minors the rest of the year its absolutely stupid unless they have some sort of injury knowledge or something like that which would make it impossible for him to remain as a starter long term.

His hit tool hasnt shown up yet, but i love Isan Diaz's game as a long term 2b. Power bat who walks a ton. K's a lot but he'll have a high overall OBP due to his power and patience at the plate. Had 3 walks and a hit tonight. 13 walks in 16 games thus far. Still hasnt gotten hot with the bat yet, but i dont have many doubts that it will come as the year goes on and he adjusts to this new level. Love him as our long term 2b. Maybe give him a september call up just to let him get some experience in the majors, then let him start next year in AAA for a month or 2 then bring him up for good.

Straily/Elieser/Riddle/Prado all playing in Rehab Games today. Chen pitched Sun.

Should be getting all 5 back very soon

even with how mediocre most of them are, its crazy how much just having major league quality talent will help given that they will replace guys like Peters, Richards, Merandy (not ML ready yet), Rivera, and Shuck.

Our major league team is god awful, but its fun to watch actual prospects develop again. Dunand and Miller will be in Jax by June/July at this rate.

Robert Dugger is sort of interesting. 21 Ks and 1 BB in 21.2 innings (4 starts) pitched in Jupiter so far.
