    NEW Cubans on Market

Outfield prospects Victor Victor Mesa and Victor Mesa Jr. have left Cuba with the intent to pursue contracts with Major League clubs, reports Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com (Twitter link). The elder Mesa brother is 21 years of age, while the younger is still just 16. Victor Victor seemingly confirmed as much this morning by tweeting a picture in which he is wearing a Team USA jacket alongside his younger brother. They’re being represented by Magnus Sports, per Sanchez.

Both brothers will be considered amateur players under the collective bargaining agreement and will therefore be subject to Major League Baseball’s international bonus pools, despite the fact that the older of the two does come with six seasons of pro ball in Cuba under his belt. As such, they’ll be limited to minor league contracts and signing bonuses that are relatively minimal when compared to the top prices paid for prior Cuban stars.

The Mesa brothers are the sons of Victor Mesa, a 19-year veteran of the Cuban National Series who has in the past served as the manager of Cuba’s team in the World Baseball Classic. Scouting info on the pair is somewhat sparse, especially as pertains to the 16-year-old Mesa Jr.

Prior to last year’s WBC, however, Sanchez called the elder Mesa brother one of the top prospects in all of Cuba, reporting that he was one of the main draws for MLB scouts to the international spectacle. Per Sanchez’s brief report, Victor Victor is a plus runner and defender in the outfield with a strong throwing arm. He enjoyed a terrific campaign in the 2016-17 season in the Cuban National Series, hitting .354/.399/.539 and swiping 40 bases in 70 games — lending credence to reports on his impressive speed. In all, he’s a career .275/.334/.378 hitter in his six professional seasons in Cuba. His aggregate numbers are weighed down, to an extent, by the fact that he made his professional debut at the age of 16 and, unsurprisingly, endured some struggles against the island’s top pitchers in his first couple of seasons.

There’s obviously a fair ways to go before either will be able to sign with a big league organization. The Mesa brothers will first need to be declared free agents by Major League Baseball — a process that could take several months but has, at times, also taken as much as a year for some players. Even if they’re cleared in short order, it stands to reason that they’d likely wait to sign until at least July 2, when the 2018-19 international signing period kicks off, thus resetting the bonus pools for teams throughout the league.

Cardinals want them however they can only offer $300,000 per player

Marlins have at least 5 MILLION.

most of IFA seems like it is so dependent on developing relationships and actually putting an emphasis on it over the course of several years. It really doesnt seem like each player is making the best decision for them, it seems like a college recruiting process where certain teams have relationships with certain coaches and get players funneled to them so to speak. We seem so behind in that area, but hopefully denbo can help make inroads in that area as i remember reading either he or one of the other guys we took from the yankees has a lot of relationships developed for those kinds of situation.

That is exactly like it is. Teams let trainers use and workout at there places in the Dominican and in turn trainers steer players to those teams. We will be in the market in 2019-Denbo and Blakeley have connections (Blakeley had the 2019 TOP Prospect already signed with the Braves before they voided deal)that will start next year

Ya i figured. Thats why im more interested to see us at the very least attempting to make progress in that area moreso than the actual guys we sign. Even the cuban OF that ended up signing with the rangers seemed like he already had relationships with those 2 other teams as the rangers and yankees are consistently big players in the IFA market.

And god damn the blue jays are so lucky they were in canada and were able to get vlad jr.

Also, I wish they would either put these guys into the draft just like the domestic players or just have a draft for them as well. Seems super unfair that they dont get taken like players from the US do. I think drafts could be argued to be inherently unfair regardless, but doesnt make much sense aside from legal reasons to have one set of players have to be drafted while another can just sign outright.

Still hearing we got him but no announcement. We are in on a few B/C types as well so maybe we will make group announcement or something? Between old staff leaving and new staff hired late we won't be players in IFA till next year

I was thinking that maybe they were waiting to announce Gaston later before the game. Perhaps they want to make a bigger deal out of it as a show that they are committed to spending money on the future...just a thought.

Makes sense since he is in Miami

Not sure if this is the "Raul Campos" we signed but he has a brother who will be 16 next year

Craig Misch mentioned that miami was out on Gaston. Looks like it’s Victor or bust.

According to Craig Mish and Daniel Alvarez Montes, Marlins offered Gaston more than $2M but didn't sign him because he tested positive for PEDs
