So Ben Meyer is transitioning well to being put back into a starter role. Seems like a good enough pitcher that building him as a reliever is a waste of his talent.

Samuel Castro has an interesting statline in his short time in Batavia that is both great and awful at the same time.

Ben Meyer another great example of how our minor league system is a mess. Made it to Jupiter in 2015 as a fast moving RP however they decide to send him back to GBoro in 2016 for some reason then midyear made him a SP however end as a RP. Back to GBoro in 2017 as a RP get promoted and now a SP again.

The system has zero direction-every other system drafts a pitcher and either makes them a SP or RP. Only time they change is if injury or really sucking. We do total opposite, guys look great as a RP and are used to pitching 1 or 2 innings so we try them as a SP make them throw 6 innings then get injured due to overworked arms(Example Steven Farnworth)

Some recent minor league signings/releases c/o Baseball America:

-Signed RHP Keyvius Sampson, who was released by the Rangers on June 16. He was a 4th round pick of the Padres in 2009. He was 4-3 with a 6.75 ERA in 12 games (nine starts) with Texas' AAA affiliate this year. He's currently on the temporarily inactive list.
-Also signed as an NDFA was C Michael Hernandez out of Nova Southeastern (Fla.). He made noise by hitting two homers in one of his first pro games for GCL.

-Releases include RHP Hunter Adkins, LHP Greg Nappo, and SS Ermel Pena. Adkins had been in the organization since 2015, and had a 3.90 ERA in 27.2 innings for AA Jacksonville this year. Struck out only 18 during the 2017 season. He's already been picked up by the Rays. An 18th round pick of the Marlins in 2011, Nappo pitched for AA and AAA this year, compiling a 1.50 ERA in 9 games in Jacksonville, but a 5.91 ERA in 7 games in New Orleans. He has a career minor league ERA of 2.90 and in 397.2 innings has 411 strikeouts. Pena only has stats from 2014 in DSL, where he hit .240 in 150 at-bats.

            - - - - - - - - - -

            Going back a week further:

-SS Nick Noonan was traded to the Brewers for cash. He lasted a little over a month in Miami's organization. He hit .156 in 77 AAA at-bats, striking out 24 times in those ABs.

-RHP Stephen Fife was released so that he could sign in Japan. He was signed to a minor league deal in December. Fife started 12 games in New Orleans this year, going 4-3 with a 3.97 ERA. In 65.2 innings, he walked 18 and struck out 52.
-RHP Richard McWilliams was also released. He played Rookie ball in 2015 and '16 for the White Sox but was released in December. He never pitched for the Fish.
-Finally, OF Casey Soltis was let go. A 2014 5th round pick, Soltis hasn't played in 2017 and never got above A-ball. He hit .190 in 2016 and .182 in 2015, both with Greensboro.

They are still dropping like flies. LJ Brewster retired and JJ Gould was released. Gould was replaced with Cleuluis Rondon who is all defense and was a prospect at one time

Trevor Richards isn't slowing down now that he's in Jax. Back to back starts 1 ER allowed. Richards building himself quickly and becoming an MLB rotation guy in 2018 would be huuuuuge for the future of the team. Rotation is a question mark after Urena (who is having a low-key major surprise positive season. Pitching like a legitimate #3 this year). Conley should also be a long term guy despite his struggles this year.

Also good start from Nicolino. He's capable of being a solid MLB starter just has never had the consistency.

Brian Anderson has hit a home run in back to back games. You'd love to see him putting up just a bit better numbers in AA but he's still what the team should see as the late 2018 replacement to Martin Prado as the future MLB starting 3B.

2017-18 Rotation is coming along nicely- Straily,Urena,Peters,Richards and ? We know Jeff ain't spending no cash next year(if he is still here)

By way Dillon Peters is back, threw in the GCL today. Not great but getting back at least

The positive about Anderson is nice power numbers. He plays a solid 3B and long as he has some power in the MLB I dont mind him as a replacement

Trevor Richards went to Mater Dei in Breese, IL, the same high school as former Mets/Blue Jays catcher Josh Thole. Local burger joint Wallys has some of the best burgers you will ever eat, along with a Mets Thole jersey hanging on the wall.

Is James Nelson at Greensboro worth keeping an eye on? Is supposedly a little raw but has the tools to be a good defensive 3B and is hitting .318/.367/.471 in 255 ABs as a 19 year old; hit .284/.344/.364 in rookie ball last year.
