  • Minor Signings

    Per BA

Signed: RHP Enmanuel Mercedes, RHP Henry Valencio, C Rafael Eysseric, SS Walner Espinal, SS Joseph Gilma, SS Peter Mooney (re-signed), OF Danyeli Espinal, OF Daniel Paulino, OF Moises Sierra (re-signed), OF Maicol Sosa

Mooney and Sierra are AA depth. Also last week we resigned Issac Galloway. Looks like most of these guys are cheap IFA signings

Isaac Galloway. Wow, remember him out of high school. Feel like we've drafted about 15 different guys since then that are exactly the same as him. His continued career in our minor league system is a minor miracle considering he has literally never been good. He has never had above a .703 OPS at any level past GCL.

No surprise(since we seem to sign Indy Guys) but we signed this guy

•Promising indy ball player Dalton Wheat has had his contract purchased by the Marlins, as his former team, the Kansas City T-Bones, announced recently. According to a gripping story in the Wyandotte Daily, Wheat isn’t just an interesting player who was overlooked after a strong D-II college career, leading Baseball America to name him the top indy ball prospect. He also already has a legitimately unusual, trademark attribute that will make him a fascinating player to watch as he enters the affiliated ranks. Beyond his top-end speed and solid on-base potential, Wheat truly shows up to work — taking his turns at the plate with a pair of standard-issue work gloves rather than typical baseball batting gloves. (Yes, the Wyandotte Daily provides a great photo.) Wheat tells a fan on Twitter that he’ll keep chopping wood in his signature handwear so long as the Marlins allow it.

      1. Dalton Wheat, of, Kansas City T-Bones (American Association)

      Age: 22. B-T: L-R. Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 185.

Wheat was an all-conference outfielder at Division II Emporia (Kan.) State, where he hit a team-best .391/.474/.613 with 19 steals in 25 attempts as a senior. Jumping straight from Emporia State to the T-Bones, Wheat then led Kansas City with a .335 batting average and a .414 on-base percentage. A lefthanded hitter, Wheat projects as a table-setter with plus-plus speed and solid plate discipline that should produce strong on-base numbers. He had an accurate arm with enough strength to play right field regularly for Kansas City but also played center. He can play all three outfield spots well enough to project as a potential fourth outfielder. Wheat has well below-average power despite size (6-foot-2, 185 pounds) and he hasn’t perfected bunting to utilize his speed.

Well looks like we won't be "testing" any of our young guys again. We just signed our AA 3B-27 yr old NON Prospect

•The Marlins added third baseman David Vidal on a minor league deal, per an announcement from the Somerset Patriots. Vidal, 27, never made it past Double-A with the Reds, but had a big year for Somerset in 2016. Over 370 plate appearances, he slashed .320/.413/.633 and added 26 long balls. Vidal also showed quality plate discipline, with 45 walks to go with 68 strikeouts.

The Marlins have added a trio of left-handed relievers to their depth chart by agreeing to minor league pacts with Kyle Lobstein, Caleb Thielbar and Frank Garces, as MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro writes. Miami has also picked up catcher Carlos Paulino on minors pact.

They released some high priced DSL guys. Capellan(500k)Castro(600k). Ya they sucked but still confusing why we give up on guys before they hit 19?

See this is the issue with the IFA guys we sign. Teams sign Top 20 Ranked guys for 600k while we give cash out on projects then get rid of them. However the reason Top 20 guys sign for cheap is because most of them have been trying at that clubs place for years already while the others sign because we offered the most cash

Denn Dekker signed. Good minors career never translated to big league success. AAAA guys are so unfortunate

Final Cuts and like usual with us-weird cuts. Romero forgot how to hit but rather have him then a 29 yr old in AA,Sadberry couldn't stay healthy(still think we should have taken Ben Holmes but least we got him) and Guillory was taken LY and had this http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp...ching/2016/ALL

Released: RHP Preston Guillory | LHP Nick Maronde | LHP Chris Sadberry | LHP Caleb Thielbar | C Sharif Othman | 2B Giovanny Alfonzo | 2B Yefry Reyes | 3B Avery Romero

Acquired: RHP Clayton Mortensen from Royals for cash
Traded: C James Lovett to Phillies for cash

Well Avery Romero's career fizzled out quite quickly. Not sure why we just released Guillory when we drafted him last year and he came in right away and put up great numbers. Our drafting is abysmal.

Avery Romero was interesting back when he had the hit tool. The moment he lost that he became essentially worthless given his defense isn't anything to write home about and he offers little else at the plate (no power, no ability to draw walks). Still he's the kind of guy the Marlins should be taking chances on in the 3rd round or so, paying higher than slot value for athletes.
