Also I've said it before but Urena is having a sneaky good year at AA with his ERA not telling the whole story. He's easily one of our top 3 pitching prospects currently

I mean one and two are givens (Kolek, Heaney), but are we sure Urena is the clear cut unarguable # 3 here?

Not really getting into an argument, but why do you want to vault him over Nicolino, Williams, Conley, DeScalfani, Flynn, even Brice.

Probably poor choice of words to say "easily". But when I look at the kind of stuff all of those pitchers bring (and it has come in very limited video offerings obviously), Urena was always very very impressive. If we're going on what the consensus is it would be hard to argue Nicolino is our 3rd ranked pitching prospect in the system behind Heaney/Kolek. But even when you look purely at the numbers Urena is younger than Nicolino (only two months so it's not a big selling point), he gives the team deep starts every time he goes out, he has a really solid ground ball rate (better than Nicolino's), and he's struck out 41 more batters than Nicolino in 3 less innings while allowing just 29 walks in 148 IP.

Conley was one of the top ranked guys before his injury to start the year. His ranking has taken a big hit. Williams is getting up there but he's in A+ ball at about the same age Urena/Nicolino are facing AA guys and Williams gives up a lot of hits, which seems to signal he's due for a regression at the next level. DeSclafani's ranking is much better than it was at this time last year but he had so/so MLB success, hasn't really stood out at any level in the minors, plus when you take his age and the fact that he might be bullpen bound at some point I can't rank him too high. Flynn has had a real bleh year and really hasn't impressed in his MLB stints, and Brice is more of an up and coming 'real' prospect than a top pitching prospect. I've been a big advocate of Brice since the start of the season and it's cool to see him have relative success (his ERA is really inflated by one 8 ER allowed game), but he was posting a near 6 ERA at GBoro last year. We all need to see consistent, back to back good seasons to put him higher than top 18 or so prospects in the system.

There's a very real chance at Domingo German emerges next season and becomes that true #3 pitching prospect in the system.

And while I've already said I agree with Kolek at #2, I really do hate pushing prospects all the way up in the prospect rankings simply because they came in as high draft prospects. I'd say Kolek in actuality is somewhere between Desclafani and German at the moment, but his potential (100 MPH) obviously pushes him up the boards.

Cool. I agree this is a total crapshoot.

I can't really pick a # 3-10 pitching prospect here with any confidence, but I think I would gamble on the upside with Nicolino. Say what we will about the Ks, there are GB, low HR, control, and being left handed. Counts for something, and fan graphs thinks he can work off his change up and could develop a plus curve. Still young, but I have to defer to the SP prospect here and the longterm view.

I like to think Williams turns into Koehler and surprises everyone by getting better as he moves forward and that Urena and Conley turn into solid bullpen arms. I don't have much confidence in Flynn and DeScalfani, maybe thats unfair because I've seen them blown up at the MLB level and the other guys are in the minors, and Brice/German are certainly lottery tickets.

End of the day, if they get one #4 SP and two solid bullpen arms out of all these guys, that's probably a huge success.

Flynn was a fluke last season, he's been significantly worse in AAA this season. Righties hitting .310/.367/.463 off him, significant drop in K rate. He's not going to be a major league starter.

I'd like to see what he could do out of the pen though.
