  • Unassigned: Dillon Peters, LHP

    --------------------
Former Cathedral High School standout Dillon Peters is tied for fourth among active Big 12 pitchers with 17 victories. Unfortunately, he didn't get a chance to add to that victory total in the regional.

Peters was ruled out of the postseason with an elbow injury. Peters felt soreness in his elbow in the Big 12 Tournament on May 22. In that final start, the junior left-hander pitched five shutout innings against Oklahoma State.

It is unclear how the injury will affect his Major League Baseball draft status. Peters is listed as the No. 112 prospect by Baseball America. He told The Indianapolis Star on Tuesday he didn't want to do any interviews prior to the draft.

Stan Meek, the Marlins' vice president of scouting, said Peters will undergo Tommy John surgery after exiting his last start with elbow soreness.

"We realize [his return is] going to be a year down the road, and I think [the injury] caused other people not to take him," Meek said. "But we feel pretty confident in the Tommy John surgery process. It'll be a year late, but we just felt like where we had him on our board at that spot we couldn't pass him up.

"We're willing to take a chance. We think we can sign him at a very reduced cost, and that makes him attractive to us down in that spot."

The most intriguing 10th-rounder was Texas lefthander Dillon Peters, the Marlins’ pick with the second selection of the round. Peters has above-average pitchability and solid stuff, locating an 88-92 mph fastball and solid-average secondary stuff as well. He was expected to be a fast-mover but an elbow injury late in May knocked him down draft boards. Scouting director Stan Meek told MLB.com that Peters will require Tommy John surgery this summer and said, “We think we can sign him at a very reduced cost, and that makes him attractive to us down in that spot.”

            MLBPipeline #29 Prospect

            Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 55 | Overall: 40

A strong track record of performing both in college at Texas and in the Indiana prep ranks had Peters poised to go early in the 2014 Draft. But he saw his stock slide after suffering an elbow injury in late May that ultimately forced him to undergo Tommy John surgery after signing with the Marlins.

When healthy, Peters shows a good feel for pitching that helps his stuff play up. His fastball sits around 90 mph and can add or subtract velocity and movement on the pitch. His curveball is his best offering and he also mixes in a deceptive changeup. He throws all of his pitches for strikes and isn't afraid to come after hitters.

Though Peters lacks the size of a classic big league starter, he'll give the Marlins another advanced pitcher if he's able to return to the form he showed in college.
