Schales will become a Dirtbag after his senior season at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, Calif. A four-year varsity player, Schales is already a decorated infielder. He earned First Team All-League honors as a sophomore and junior for his high school team. Schales was also invited to the US National Team Development Program as well as the Professional Baseball Scouts of Southern California’s All-Star Game.

Buckley commented on Schales, “Brian profiles out to be a middle order bat with a very repeatable swing with solid bat speed. He also has a solid glove and arm tool on the defensive side of the ball as an infielder. Brian has exciting projection of strength and he has been exposed to solid competition both during high school and in summer/fall which will aid in his jump to our program.”

• The Marlins went off the BA 500 while taking shortstop Brian Schales of Edison High in Huntington Beach, Calif. Schales was the league player of the year in his conference and a Long Beach State commitment with a simple, repeatable swing and solid bat speed. Announced as a shortstop, he projects as a third baseman as he adds strength to his frame with a solid-average arm and solid-average hitting tools. Some scouts project above-average power if he can improve his plate approach. He has good hands and solid infield actions and should stay in the infield. He’s listed at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds but has room to grow and get stronger.

Edison High shortstop Brian Schales, the 2014 MVP of the Sunset League, and Fountain Valley first baseman Brock Lundquist, last year's league MVP, were selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball draft.

Schales was a fourth-round selection by the Miami Marlins. Lundquist went in the 37th round to the Oakland Athletics.

Schales and Lundquist, who played on rival teams, both previously committed to Long Beach State.

Schales, a four-year starter at shortstop for Edison, was a force in the field and at the plate. In 31 games, he hit .396, had 36 hits, homered seven times, walked 21 times, had 22 RBIs and struck out just eight times in 91 at-bats. Defensively, he committed only four errors.

"The thought was that he would go anywhere between the fourth and 10th rounds, and it was really exciting to see him go in the fourth," Edison Coach Cameron Chinn said of Schales. "His skill tools, or skill set, is very impressive.

"He does such a great job offensively but the one thing I think gets overlooked is his play on defense. He committed only four errors and I believe that says a lot about his abilities. He really saves us a lot this year."

Chinn said Tuesday he learned that Schales had signed with the Marlins' organization. Schales couldn't be reached for comment.

Schales didn't have a lot of buzz coming into the 2014 Draft, but the Marlins liked his tools and grabbed him in the fourth round.

Schales has a simple swing and does a good job of putting the barrel on the ball. He produces good bat speed, and scouts believe that will translate into power as he physically matures. Though he was announced as a shortstop during the Draft, he primarily played third base during his professional debut. His arm strength, hands and range all profile well at the hot corner.

Scouts praise Schales for his makeup and understanding of the game, two traits that will help him continue to develop as he advances in the Minor Leagues.
