It doesn’t always take a breakout summer in terms of staggering stat lines to get a player his proper recognition. The world of top prospects isn’t populated only by players like Max Pentecost and Sean Manaea before him who put themselves in the forefront of the draft picture by shear force of will and dominant results.

Sometimes there are players like Arkansas’ Brian Anderson, who from the outside looking in would appear to have had a setback of a summer in the Cape Cod League in 2013. And, while of course, a trying summer season does raise questions, more importantly it was a summer that put Anderson squarely on the national radar and allowed scouts to dream on what he was capable of being.

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the season with our 2014 Top 100 College Baseball Players. Today, we continue the countdown at number 36 with Arkansas infielder/outfielder Brian Anderson. The Edmond, Oklahoma native attended Deer Creek High School where he finished his senior season with a .509 batting average with 61 runs, 17 doubles and five triples. He was named first-team all-Edmond honors in 2010 and 2011 while being named all-city, all-state, and Suburban Conference Player of the Year in 2011.

As a freshman in 2012, he appeared in 47 games, including 33 starts, hitting .283 with two homers and 11 RBI and finishing third on the team with a .396 on-base percentage. He played the summer of 2012 in the Northwoods League with the Lakeshore Chinooks while hitting .290 with five home runs and 18 RBI, while also compiling a .300 on-base percentage.

His sophomore season saw him start 59 games while hitting a team high .325 while tying for the team lead with four homers and 36 RBI. He was also the team leader in runs scored (47), hits (68), doubles (12), triples (5), total bases (102), slugging percentage (.488), walks (41) and on-base percentage (.448). He was named second team All-SEC for his strong 2013 campaign.

High-profile collegians started off the round. Some scouts thought 2B/OF Brian Anderson (Marlins, No. 76) was the best position-player prospect in the Southeastern Conference starting the year. He hit .328/.401/.498 with a career-best seven home runs but saw his walk/strikeout ratio go backwards.

Anderson proved to be a versatile defender during his college career at Arkansas, appearing at several positions. But it was his bat that scouts were most interested in, and his hitting ability got him drafted in the third round in 2014.

Anderson has a smooth swing and a good feel for the barrel. He already produces solid raw power and has a chance for more as he adds strength to his slender frame.

The Marlins used Anderson at both second and third base during his professional debut. With his size and strong arm he may fit best at the hot corner, but he could still end up back at second base or even in the outfield. No matter where he settles defensively, it'll be up to his bat to carry him through the Minor Leagues.

John Sickels #5 Prospect

5) Brian Anderson, 2B-3B, Grade B-: Age 21, a year from now this may look too low, third round pick from University of Arkansas, hit .314/.378/.516 in 153 at-bats in Low-A. Can handle second base but could have enough power and glove for third as well, really strikes me as underrated. Power is real, good swing, runs well, throws well, might suffer from Boring Name Syndrome and get overlooked a bit.
