  • Dallas Trahern Has Surgery

"I figure this will get out soon anyway so I might as well tell you. Dallas had Tommy John surgery AND Flexor Tendon surgery today in Alabama. Dr. Andrews did the surgery and it went well."

Posted by his friend at that other place. He'll likely miss all of '10. Interesting to see what they do since he's on the 40 man.

        So one piece rendered worthless?

I guess two since we let that one guy go at the beginning of the season on waivers.

Not like TJ is some major surgery. I assume we call him up and put him on the 60 day DL like we did with harvey garcia last year.

            Michael Rabelo?

Thriller has yet to impress me and Cam hasn't hit ML pitching yet. (Not saying they are worthless, but I don't see much value on our end yet).

I don't know if Rabelo has proven worthless. There's a chance he can come up and be a decent-ish backup catcher against LHP. I know he spiked the ball and all that and everyone hated him and all of that and all that, but there's some value in being a decent-ish backup catcher.

Trahern could still turn out to be a decent-ish back of the rotation or long relief guy, though it doesn't necessarily look good now.

Not saying we got a huge haul for Cabrera. But really, one guy got sent away for nothing. One guy has had TJ. One guy has been inconsistent but has also shown at least some of the flashes you like to see from a young pitcher, one guy had a bad month at the major league level but tore up AAA, one guy looked lost last year but might someday not embarrass himself as a backup catcher who is somewhat decent against LHP and one guy has become a very valuable long reliever.

I think Rabelos back is so fucked up he is DHing right now in like, the GCL.

If Maybin becomes an .800+ SP, Miller can eat 180-200 IP at a low 4 era, and Badenhop eats 70 innings and a 4.50 era, with clearing money to sign Hanley, probably JJ after this season, and keeping around some of the arbitration bats 2008-2011, I say it's a big win for the Marlins despite how awesome Cabrera is.

Trahern's going to have a bionic arm.

Count me in the boat of the Cabrera trade looking really horrible right now. It's been almost two years and the only decent thing we have to show for that trade as of this moment is a long reliever.

And one guy might be the best right handed hitter in the American League.

                        Shit, you're right.

If you want to argue we should have tried to get like Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw or Billingsley or something, that's one thing. But that's hindsight, since at the time there was really no difference between them and the guys we actually got, just that they are actually succeeding now. But to complain still that we traded Miggy is kind of ignoring the realities of being a fan of our ball club. That was going to happen once he finished his 4th season and was on a hall of fame track and wasn't signed long term.

See, in my opinion, the "realities of being a Marlins fan" argument is a cop-out. It was not necessarily a given that he needed to be traded. We all knew that they could have kept Miggy by offering to buy out his arbitration years earlier. All of us were clamoring for it.

The mistake was not made by choosing between the Dodgers package or the Tigers package; it was putting ourselves in the position to have to trade him in the first place.

we likely would have had to trade him anyway. At this point Cabrera would be making a lot lot of money, money that would be needed for Hanley and the rest of the team.

did anyone think the trade was a bad one at the time?

maybin and miller were top prospect, badenhop was the tigers minor league pitcher of the year, and rabelo was there backup catcher.

ATM the trade is a complete win for the tigers, DLC and rabelo didnt contribute much, and i dont expect rabelo to. Maybin struggled in the ML, and Miller has flashes of ace material.

in the future i think ill be a win-win trade, maybin is gonna be like mike cameron jr. and Miller will be a solid middle of the rotation starter.

Interesting looking back and seeing all the guys the marlins passed on. Adenhart, Wood, Kendrick, Saunders to name a few.
