#469 in BA Top 500, won't be signing

Dutchtown's right-handed pitcher became the final Louisiana prep product to hear his name called on Saturday, but like Williams and Sensley before him, Stapler said it was highly unlikely he would sign.

Stapler is committed to Nicholls State, where he could form a tandem with Williams in the rotation next year if Williams decides on college over the Red Sox.

Still, the big, hard-throwing Stapler said he had a nice conversation with the Marlins representatives after the team selected him with the 1,042nd overall pick.

“They told me they’ve been watching me for a while and like my size and my arm,” Stapler said. “They knew my signability wouldn’t have been right for slot they had, but they wanted to give me the honor of being drafted. Not everyone can say they’ve ben drafted out of high school.”

Stapler said any negotiations with Miami are as good as out of the question and that he’d be attending Nicholls State.
