Assuming Brantly is also still on the team, Cishek is still closing despite the hilarious Ramos projection, Ruggiano is the 4th OF, Dunn is still in the pen, Cox is on the bench, and the bullpen is made up of guys like Conley, Ramos, Dayton, Lowell, etc as club controlled or barely making money...

payroll is roughly $60 million. 25-30% of that is Stanton, Morrison and Cishek are each 10-12% of that, meaning those 3 are almost half of payroll, and throw in Ruggiano in an arb 3 year, that's half of payroll for 4 guys.
    --------------------
Nice projection for Heaney though. He and Nicolino could be a pretty cool lefty core. They are eventually going to have to trade pitchers and outfielders for infielders (plus probably sign others), but all good besides that.

How long do you think Cishek stays here?
Just asking because the team is not good; if he's pitching well and racking up saves for four months, he should probably be trade bait, right?

According to Cot's, He's not a free agent until 2018.

So I would not trade him.

That only makes him more valuable to other teams though if he pitches well.
We could probably get a couple of nice young players for him if he pitches well for a third consecutive year, and is boosting his saves total in the process.

At this point, I think the team just needs to acquire potential assets, and hope they turn into something.

I think what Erick is saying is, Cishek is going to be a $6 million dollar pitcher in 2015 (he is a very likely Super2 next year which will multiply his arbitration fast) if he keeps getting saves, and even more in 2016-2017 in his final two years of arbitration. As we know, Erick is in the "why pay any reliever for saves" camp, so the question isn't about the 5 years of control Cishek has, but his expected value moving forward based on what he will be making (like a Chris Perez) in the future.

If he isn't a "long term" piece because he prices himself off the team in 3 seasons, when is the smartest time to trade him for maximum value so another franchise gets some of the cheap (2013-2015) years before he might price himself into a significant ($8-12) annual expenditure where the Marlins just kind of have to 'dump' him for payroll reasons.

I'd imagine they would start entertaining him for a trade summer 2014. They need another year and a half of evaluation on:

                  Fernandez, Turner, Nicolino, Heaney, Alvarez/Eovaldi
Next: (no order) Alvarez/Eovaldi, Ramos, Conley, Dayton, Urena, Hope, Brice, Lowell, Webb, Dunn, Koehler, Ceda, Caminero, Reed, Flynn, C. James, Jennings, Olmos

Plus likely more pitching with a lot of 2013 draft picks, and likely great 2014 draft picks, plus absolutely no money on the book. And who knows if they do move Stanton for more pitching.

He might just become expendable. But I don't think there is any timetable or thought of moving him now. If all the pitching works out, then I think this becomes a real topic. But it's way to early. A lot is going to happen next 18 months with all these guys.
                  --------------------
Also, need to see if he does qualify for Super 2. If he doesn't he becomes significantly cheaper so even racking up "saves" wouldn't kill the franchise payroll wise.

It's just a wait and see thing. See if the other pitchers can realistically replace him, see if he qualifies for Super 2, and see if Cishek holds up. This will take care of itself with time. It's just premature unless Cishek can be turned into something daffy like Mike Olt which really isn't a possibility.

Kinda surprised that they have Brantley's potential so low.

He's been ehh in the minors. I think a lot of Marlins fans are overrating him.

As I said the other day in the Keith Law thread, Marlins fans, in general, seem to think higher of him than most.

He doesn't seem to project to have much upside, really.
