  • Suns and Marlins Extend PDC

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Jacksonville Suns are proud to announce they have signed a new Player Development Contract with the Miami Marlins. The new two-year agreement is for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The Suns have been an affiliate with the Marlins since 2009.

The Suns have had great success in the Marlins Organization as they won back-to-back Southern League Championships in 2009 and 2010 and have sent many players to the majors, including Marlins standout Giancarlo Stanton. The Suns have never had a losing season in the four years leading up to this extension.

Jacksonville Suns President Peter Bragan Jr is happy about staying with the Marlins for two more years.

"We are excited to have the Marlins back in Jacksonville, and I fully expect the Marlins to send us a team that will contend for another Southern league Championship in 2013."

Miami Marlins Director of Player Development Brian Chattin also weighed in on the new agreement.

"The Miami Marlins are pleased to extend our partnership with the Jacksonville Suns through the 2014 season. With its first-class facility, quality fan base and close proximity to our major league club, Jacksonville is an ideal fit for us. The Suns have been one of the best and most stable organizations in all of minor league baseball for a long time. We are proud to have them as our player development partner."

Have I always been wrong in thinking the parent club are the people sending the players and coaches to their minor league affiliates?

      you're correct about that

Some organizations give the AAA (and maybe even the AA) front office some input on decisions. I know with the Clippers here in Columbus, our GM meets with the Indians GM and they project the prospects already in the system that will be in Columbus and then the Clippers GM has a lot of say in the free agents they go after to surround them, but it's the major league club that runs it.
