  • 2022 Draft

With the draft starting to get talked about a little more as it approaches, I was curious if anyone had any opinions on the top candidates for the Marlins. Dru Jones is a pipe dream, but the best player in last year's draft did fall to 5, so I guess it's not impossible. I'd be pretty happy with any of the current consensus top 6 or so (Jones, Termarr Johnson, Brooks Lee, Elijah Green, Jackson Holliday, and Kevin Parada). I think I'd also be ok with Jace Jung, although he feels a little less exciting. I'm always interested in catchers, so Parada is intriguing, but there is some upside and potential organizational needs with the other guys there as well.

Parada and Jung make the most sense to me. There is a real lack of hitting in High-A and AA right now, so a college hitter that moves quickly seems like the right choice.

a power hitting college corner infielder or pure center fielder makes the most sense to me.

The Bleday experience worries me a little bit with Jung. Not exactly the same situation, but he feels like he could be a similar prospect. I do like the idea that he could move quickly, but the HS hitters seem pretty advanced, so I wouldn't be against taking one of them. Maybe Brooks Lee and Parada would be the best of both worlds of upside and being closer.

Have to pick things up as far as drafting goes. Off the top of my head, Brian Anderson and Trevor Rogers are the only draft picks that are contributing Marlins. That doesn't speak well for the scouts over the last six or seven years.

The last two MLB.com mocks have them taking Jacob Berry over Johnson and Jung, and I don't love that. If people thought he could stick at 3rd, maybe, because you like the power potential. But another corner OF (or maybe more likely DH only) over the huge upside of Termarr Johnson isn't something I think I would do, even if Berry moves faster.

I still think my ideal realistic scenario is Parada, though.

The latest MLB.com mock has them taking Termarr Johnson, and says their pick probably comes down to Green, Johnson, and Berry. You'd also have to imagine if Brooks Lee somehow got there he'd be in the mix as well, and the same for Parada (although based on what they're saying it doesn't look like he'll get past the Nats, and probably goes higher than that). I still don't really want Berry, but any of the other names would be good in my opinion.

In the latest Prospects Live mock draft, they say Miami is focusing on “safe” college bats. Honestly, I hope this isn’t true. If that means Parada or Brooks Lee, if they’re there, I would be ok with that. But I don’t love that if it means taking Jacob Berry or Jung over a guy like Johnson, Holliday, or Green if they’re on the board.

I feel like whatever they plan bat wise in the draft, they should do the opposite with the recent track record of them and bats.

give me a fast rising college bat please. We've taken enough of the high school guys who are still in the system years away, get a power college bat that can move through the system fast. Preferably at CF, 3b, or 1b.

I’d be happy with Parada or Termarr Johnson.

I understand that notion, but that’s how you end up with a JJ Bleday over a CJ Abrams. Johnson’s hit tool is way too enticing for me to pass on him if he’s there. I can understand them shying away from Elijah Green because there is real risk there, but he has so much upside at a position of need, that I think he’s worth the risk.

You’re seeing Berry mocked to them more and more, and while his bat looks pretty good, he doesn’t really have a position. I’d much rather Lee (he probably won’t be there) or Parada (it’s looking like he could be).

I agree with Nick. My top two choices would be Johnson or Parada, but I’d also be pretty happy with Lee if he’s there.

Oh shit. Rocker taken #3. We should be able to get a really good bat.

                              If they don’t take Parada…..
