Eastern Michigan University junior starting pitcher Steve Weber was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 33rd round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday, June 6. Weber becomes the 67th player in EMU history to be drafted into the majors.

In 16 appearances during the 2012 season including 15 starts, Weber (7-5) led the Eagles in wins, strikeouts (62), complete games (three) and shutouts (two). Weber just completed a terrific Mid-American Conference season which saw him post a 6-2 record over nine starts. In the MAC Tournament, the North Royalton, Ohio native took a loss in his only start despite tossing a 10-inning complete game against Miami University, May 24, in which he allowed just two earned runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts. His other complete games against Ball State University, April 21, and Bowling Green State University, May 5, were both of the shutout variety.

For his career, Weber has posted a 15-14 record over 49 appearances and 35 starts. He pitched 216.2 innings and struck out 148 batters. Weber also has one-career save to his credit.

“It is a real honor for Steve to be drafted and I am proud of him,” said Head Coach Jay Alexander. “We hope to have him back next season so he can improve his status and be drafted even higher next time around.” Weber still has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining.

Weber, the 1007th selection in this year's MLB Draft, is the first player EMU player to ever be drafted by the Marlins organization. The 6-foot-6 right hander is the fourth player drafted under Alexander, as Matt Skirving (2010), Jim Gulliver (2009) and Kyle Rhoad (2009) were all selected since Alexander took over in 2009.
