The Miami Marlins on Wednesday selected Miami native and St. Thomas product Dane Stone in the 25th round of the First-Year Player Draft. Stone earned first-team NAIA All-American honors after going 5-2 with a 1.38 ERA, 16 saves, eight walks and 34 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings.
Stone attended Miami Southridge High School before St. Thomas. One of Stone’s St. Thomas’ roommates brought him to the Marlins’ attention. Kevin Colon, a warehouse manager in the club’s retail operations department, was Stone’s teammates on the 2010 club. He urged the Marlins to give him a look.
Some additional notes on Stone:
** Is the fourth NAIA First-Team All-American from St. Thomas and the first since outfielder Nick Alvarez was selected All-American in 2000.
** Established the school’s single-season and career saves record at 16 and 18, respectively.
** Ranked second among all NAIA pitchers in saves
** Was not scored upon in 21 of 25 appearances and did not allow a hit in 12 outings.Originally posted by Madman81Most of the people in the world being dumb is not a requirement for you to be among their ranks.
