Like it. Obviously can K people out. Now hopefully he improves just focusing on pitching and forget about hitting.

It's not over till it's over, but Tennessee baseball coach Dave Serrano was "ecstatic" Tuesday night after the Major League draft finished 15 rounds.

The Vols will lose junior Drew Steckenrider, an eighth-round pick of the Miami Marlins as a pitcher.

Still, even though there are 25 rounds left today, Serrano was optimistic UT will hold on to its signing class, none of whom were selected Tuesday.

"As a group, we baseball coaches are ecstatic,'' Serrano said. "College baseball got better today.''

Serrano was reasonably confident of keeping signees like Vincent Jackson, A.J. Simcox, Tyler Smith and Dave Houser in the fold.

"In the past I'd be nervous,'' Serrano said, "but the way the draft is slotted this year, (Major League teams) can't just throw out any amount of money in the later rounds.

"They have to hold pretty close to the slots.''

Steckenrider had indicated to Serrano he was ready to move on after three seasons at UT. The 6-foot-5 right-hander went as the 257th pick.

A second-team All-SEC pick in 2012, Steckenrider hit .221 with a team-high six home runs but his future is on the mound.

            He made a team-high 27 appearances and pitched 67 innings with a 3.36 ERA. He was 4-6 and recorded a team-high 79 strikeouts.

He held opposing batters to a .197 average, lowest of any pitcher in the SEC, according to UT.

"As coaches, if we feel a player is ready we don't want to hold him back,'' Serrano said. "We feel Drew is ready.

"We see what the pro guys see in him, a big arm.''
