no, I haven't seen him much (bobbob, beef)
    --------------------
from a Cape Cod League interview a few weeks ago:

2012 broadcaster Sam Levitt had the chance to ask Vanderbilt’s Anthony Gomez a few questions about his college season and this upcoming summer. Gomez was a member of the 2011 Firebirds and will be returning for his second season with the team in June. The junior infielder currently leads the Commodores in batting average (.357), hits (74), and RBI (45).

Q: Fill us in on what you have been up to this offseason! How has your college season at Vanderbilt gone thus far?

Anthony Gomez: Well, our college season down here at Vanderbilt got off to a rocky start but we finally got ourselves over the .500 mark going into the last SEC series of the year. We are looking to make the best of our time at the SEC Tournament and hopefully carry that into a NCAA Tournament Regional bid.

Q: How much do you think having the experience of last season will help you on the Cape in 2012?

AG: Since the Cape is the most well-known college summer league in the country, I was pretty nervous about how I’d fair up there. With a year under my belt, I know what to expect and I can enjoy my time up there with the rest of the Firebirds, including a few of my Vandy teammates.

Q: What have you missed most about Cape Cod since leaving and what are you most looking forward to in your second season?

AG: My host family (Mary, Will, TJ, and Justin) was amazing last summer and I had a great time with them. I plan to stay with them again and enjoy the new ice cream shop that should be opening soon.

Q: What have been some of the keys to your success at the plate this spring as you continue to lead the Commodores in batting average?

AG: The biggest key to my success as the plate has been the support I’ve had around me in the lineup. When the guys in front of you get on base and the guys behind you are constant homerun threats, hitting becomes a whole lot easier.

Q: With your experience, what would be the greatest piece of advice you could offer a fellow position player if they are playing in the Cape Cod League for the first time?

AG: Enjoy every minute you have up in the Cape because the summer goes fast. Take the time to make new friends and don’t press yourself to be successful on the field. The more fun you have, the better you end up doing.

Seems like he doesn't walk, doesn't K, and doesn't run very fast or hit for any power. Hits for high average though.

Very true but our MI Depth is so bad in the minors either Nola or Gomez could be in GBoro this year and Jupiter next year

                  3. Anthony Gomez - 6th round (197th overall) - Miami Marlins

Chance of returning: 50/50. It's tough to imagine any one player who embodies the Commodore spirit better than Gomez. The rangy shortstop put together his best season in black and gold with a team-leading .353 average and 57 RBI. There was a void of leadership amongst this team's offense when Jason Esposito, Curt Casali, and Aaron Westlake all left after last year's CWS run, but Gomez was there to fill that role and lead this team back from the dead.

Gomez had already announced his plans to return to his summer league team before the draft, but that was before learning of his newfound opportunity with the Marlins. After three years of similar play (seriously, GoGo has been this good since coming to Nashville), it's tough to imagine scouts learning much more about him. He could stand to add more power to his game, but he may already be at his limit size-wise after three years in the SEC. Another all-conference year could elevate him to the fourth round or so in 2013, but if he returns to Vandy it would be to boost his team rather than his stock.

Corbin doesn’t expect to see Anthony Gomez back in a Vanderbilt uniform. Corbin said Gomez intends on signing with the Miami Marlins, who drafted him in the sixth round. That leaves a big hole near the top of the lineup after the shortstop batted .353 in three years and totaled 265 hits — fifth-most in school history.

Nutley native Anthony Gomez made his next step towards the Major Leagues. On Monday, June 18, Gomez went 2-5 with one RBI in his professional baseball debut for the Jamestown Jammers, the Class A Affiliate of the Miami Marlins.

Gomez was drafted in the sixth round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Marlins, a team that seems to be a perfect fit for Gomez.

"I have a lot of family in Miami, so they were happy to hear that," said Gomez, the former Don Bosco Prep stand out. "But when it comes down to the draft your just hoping your name gets called. You don't really care who picks you. I've never been drafted before so going into it I had no idea as to where I stood. I got a call from the Marlins in the sixth round and it was great. I didn't care what round it was, but it felt great."

Although some clubs scouted him as a second baseman, the Marlins made it clear that want him to play his natural position.

"When hearing feedback from clubs about Anthony, some projected him has a second baseman," said Jim Murray, Gomez's agent, another Nutley native. "But the Marlins were interested in him and they firmly believe that he's a shortstop in the making. And they firmly believe that he can be a big league ball player.

"They're a team known for developing talent. They have a new stadium now. Their M.O. from day one is to develop talent. So its a great fit for him."

The 6 foot, 185 pound shortstop has developed well in college. As a freshman, he earned a starting spot in the competitive Southeastern Conference. After three years playing for the Vanderbilt Commodores, he is fourth place all-time in career hits, with 267. After his junior year, he was just 33 hits away from the record of 300, owned by Dominic de la Osa from 2005-2008. In 2011, he broke the record for at-bats in a single season with 286. The same year, he had 96 hits, also the fourth most in Vanderbilt history for a single season. In 66 games that year, Anthony had at least one hit in 54 of them. 2011 was also the year Vanderbilt made it to the College World Series. They lost to Florida 6-4 in the semifinals.

Gomez had another impressive campaign in the 2012 season despite a slow start for the team. He led the team in batting average (.353), at bats (255), hits (90), RBIs (57), total bases (109) and had the least amount of strikeouts (15) than anyone who had over 41 at bats this season.

"What impressed me the most about Anthony is that he doesn't strike out much," said Murray, who also represents big league ball players like Andy Pettitte, David Price, Rick Porcello, Austin Jackson and Roger Clemons. "He puts the ball in play. He's aggressive at the plate. I think his power will develop. He can flat out hit, its fun to watch."

"It's a great feeling," said Gomez, of his accomplishments at Vandy. "Just to see the guys that are up there with me make me feel like I put a dent in the history of Vanderbilt."

But just as high school to college ball was a big change, the step from college to pro ball is even tougher.

"I'm just trying to get accustomed to the wooden bats," said Gomez. "I'm not going to try to set numerical goals, I just want to get used to the program as much as I can. I'm just taking it as it goes. There's a lot of new things to learn, but it's still the same game. Just better competition. I'll hopefully be able to carry it over to the professional level."

Gomez had a small taste of the majors by way of the Major League lineage he played with in college. Mike Yastrzemski, grandson of Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski was Vanderbilt's outfielder and Josh Holliday, older brother of the St. Louis Cardinal's Matt Holliday, is an assistant coach.

"It was huge," said Gomez of their impact on the team. "You have Yastrzemski, who grew up around a Major League clubhouse. He brought a lot to the table. Coach Holliday is one of the best college minds in the game right now. There was a lot of big names up around the clubhouse."

"They had a pretty good group down there," said Murray. "The coach does a tremendous job with these guys. He runs the practice like I've never seen a practice run. The baseball education is so important and it will help Anthony out going through the minor leagues."

"The best word that sums (Anthony) up is gamer," said Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin, via the Vanderbilt athletics website. "He loves to compete, has a great feel for the game and is fearless. He gives us great leadership on the field…"

Today, Gomez is getting ready to start a three game series with the Batavia Muckdogs, the St. Louis Cardinal's Class A team. Through his first eight games as a professional, Gomes has eight hits, a .308 batting average, four RBIs, two doubles, 10 total bases, three walks, three runs and a stolen base.

Anthony will continue his career and try to make it to the majors, something that he has been pushing himself every day for since he was little.

"I love to play the game," said Gomez. "When I get on the field its not really a job, it's having fun and enjoying the game. Every time I step onto the field I want to do the best I can. I try to always enjoy myself and try to do my thing. I'm just enjoying it as it comes. Nobody wanted to stop playing baseball so I'm taking every day like its my last and I'm going to enjoy it."
