Damn, another multi-hit game for Skipworth. 7/12 with 4 extra base hits has to be the best 12 at bat stretch of his career.

He's up to .255/.305/.491 vs. righties.

He has no chance vs. lefties.
          --------------------
As funny as the Skipworth stuff is, if he can hit .240 in the bigs vs. righties with some power there's no way he doesn't make the majors for at least for his cost controlled years.

I can't wait for his 0/4 4k games with the random huge home runs. We're gonna hate him so much.

Yeah, I think he can still pull a .750 OPS vs righties and platoon.

The Reds signed my favorite player, Joey Gathright, from an independent league and sent him to AAA Louisville. He is more valuable than Coghlan and Peterson.

Gathright was kinda cool in 2007 when he put up that .371 obp. Otherwise he's a speed guy who gets on base at around a .310 clip and has no pop whatsoever. He's Bonifacio

Petersen's .744 last season was 30 points higher than anything Joey's ever done in the bigs.

Since that 2007 season, Gathright's a .585ops player. Only 348 PA so I guess you could use the no one's given him a chance theory.

I would use that theory. Also, if you're talking worthless 5th OFs, which I was, I'll take the guy who ran a 6.1 60. He can cover more ground in the outfield than those guys and can be used to pinch-run late in games. I think he's a great 25th man at this stage in his career, and who knows how he'd be if he got regular playing time.

As far as the Marlins go, if we want my serious perspective on that, I'd rather have Joey G manning center on the chance that he can step in and temporarily be like Boner, until Boner gets back, than go with the Peterson/Coghlan thing we've been using.

I can definitely understand both sides to that last part. I don't think I would be nearly as accepting of a preference for a Coghlan/Peterson in that last OF spot, given the spot's role.

I like him, I always have. It's really odd that he's spent so much time in indy ball the last few years. Especially when considering his career AAA numbers (.296/.375/.355), you'd think he'd at least get AAA jobs.

                      Yep, that's always baffled me.

I remember when he first came up in 04 in Tampa against the Marlins. Him playing center with Crawford in left was fuckin' bullshit. We couldn't get anything to drop anywhere out there. It was really fun to watch them cover ground and I've been a huge fan of his ever since. I think they took a no-hitter deep into his first game against us in Tampa before we finally broke through late with a hit that got the gap between them.

I do not know why my brain is filled with unimportant memories like that.

I'd go with young guys like Peterson and Coghlan over Gathright at the end of the roster. At least there's some argument to be made for upside plays with them. Gathright's 31.

Of course, we could have signed Gathright instead of trading for Ruggiano.

Sure. Ruggiano's minor league numbers are a lot better than Gathright's, so even then, I'm not upset.

Who cares about upside from those guys in that spot? If you've got a good team that's not in rebuilding mode, then Gathright is more valuable in the role.

Upside is something that should be strived for in every roster spot, regardless of whether the team is competing or not.

If you have two players of similar talent, but one guy is likely who he is, and the other has the potential to be better, why would you not covet the player with upside?
