  • Dontrelle Willis and Steve Blass Syndrome

D-Train will always be one of my favorite baseball players.

He's playing in obscurity somewhere in the Reds farm system.

    Life is crazy man.

Steve Blass is best known for his sudden and inexplicable loss of control after the 1972 season. His ERA climbed to 9.81 in the 1973 season. He walked 84 batters in 88 innings, and struck out only 27. Blass suffered through the 1973 season, then spent most of 1974 in the minor leagues. He retired from baseball in March 1975.

A condition referred to as "Steve Blass Disease" has become a part of baseball lexicon. The "diagnosis" is applied to talented players who inexplicably and permanently seem to lose their ability to accurately throw a baseball.

Notable victims of "Steve Blass Disease" include Rick Ankiel and Dontrelle Willis.

Obscurity? He's in AAA with a 2.67 ERA and will almost certainly get a shot somewhere this season.

      LOL

He was the Cy Young runner up in 2005 and hasn't had anything resembling a good season in at least 4 years.

      He's in obscurity.

No one is rooting harder for him than I am but he's been getting "shots" every year that have yielded very poor results.

          I'd take him back
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

I think it'd be fun to see if he could outperform Vazquez

How about D-Train in an Arthur Rhodes capacity?

I think Dontrelle would have a better chance of some consistency and success with the routine that comes with starting rather than the unknowns of relieving.

I talked to the Reds general manager Walt Jocketty a few weeks ago in person and he said that Dontrelle would have gotten called up if he wasn't hurt. (He was dealing with a hamstring and groin injury at the time)
