Round 39 | Travis Huber | RHP | College of Southern Idaho | NOT SIGNED
Travis Huber, RHP, Southern Idaho Junior College: 6-3, 210. 3.96 ERA with 45/21 K/BB in 50 innings. Low-90s fastball with good slider but erratic command. He has a University of Nebraska commitment, and if he went there and sharpened up his control he could rank higher in the '12 class as a junior.
It's not the first time, but hearing his name called never gets old for Travis Huber.
For the second time in as many years, Huber was selected by the Florida Marlins on the final day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. This year the College of Southern Idaho pitcher was taken in the 39th round (1,183rd overall), eight rounds higher than Florida drafted him in the 2010 edition.
"It was exciting leading up to it, and nerve-wracking through it all," Huber said from San Luis Obispo, Calif., where he's playing summer ball. "I'm glad it's over and I'm just so excited to be drafted again. It's a huge honor."
During the 2011 season, Huber made the transition from CSI's closer to its No. 2 starter. He went 6-3 with two saves, posting a 3.75 ERA and striking out 51 batters in 57 2-3 innings.
Huber has signed to play next season at Nebraska, which will have a new coach in former big-leaguer Darin Erstad, a former No. 1 overall draft pick. Huber said he's excited about that opportunity but will listen to the Marlins as well.
"They want to see how I do this summer, and whether I can do the kinds of things they want to see," Huber said. "We'll see how it goes, how I do and what the offer is, but right now I'm leaning to Nebraska."
Two less-recent CSI players were also taken in the draft. Left-handed pitcher Tyler Barrett, a fourth-year junior at Lewis-Clark State College, was selected in the 20th round by the Detroit Tigers, and Gonzaga outfielder Tyler Chism was selected in the 43rd round by Kansas City. Both played for the Golden Eagles in the 2008-09 seasons.
A two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning delivered a thrilling 4-3 walk-off victory on Tuesday night for the San Luis Obispo Blues over the Academy Barons.
The Blues trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, Paso Robles High graduate Thomas Bernal doubled to left field. Chad Christensen pinch ran for Bernal and scored the tying run on a base hit by Austin Flores. Dylan Gavin entered the game to pinch run for Flores with two outs. Gavin promptly stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a throwing error by the center fielder.
Three San Luis Obispo pitchers combined to strike out 17 Barons. Travis Huber started for the Blues and struck out 8 in five shutout innings of three hit ball. Cal Poly recruit Nick Grim fanned two in one inning of relief, but also surrendered a three-run home run to the Barons' Andrew Allen. Harem Sidhu was lights out in relief. The Oregon State junior struck out 7 in three hitless innings of relief and earned the victory.
The Blues took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning when Bernal scored when the center fielder made an error on a base hit to center by Max Homick. Sal Belfonte scored Homick later in the inning on a double down the right field line
San Luis Obispo collected nine hits in the game. Bernal, Belfonte, Homick and Flores each collected two hits apiece. Zac Elgie added a double.
The Blues improved to 10-4 on the summer, 7-4 in California Collegiate League play. The Barons dropped to 4-12 in both categories. The Blues will go for a three game sweep on Wednesday night at 6pm in Sinsheimer Stadium.
Was projected to go in first 4-10 rds by Allan Simpson and ranked # 3 prospect in Idaho
3. TRAVIS HUBER, rhp, JC of Southern Idaho (So.)
Used as starter this spring (6-3, 3.75, 58 IP/51 SO), but profiles as reliever with power arm (90-93 FB, + SL).
Travis Huber has really bolstered his stock this summer with the way he has pitched for the San Luis Obispo Blues (Nick Grim 14rd pick on same team) to a point that it will be pretty disappointing if the Marlins can't sign him away from Nebraska, especially after drafting him in back to back yrs.
