NEW: CMU's Howard, former Mt. Pleasant standouts Tyler Mills and Tyler Higgins drafted in MLB Draft

A trio of college baseball players with local ties were drafted in the second day of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday.

Central Michigan University left-handed pitcher Trent Howard was picked by the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh round while former Mt. Pleasant High School standout Tyler Mills was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth round.

Later in the day 2009 Mt. Pleasant graduate Tyler Higgins, who recently signed to play at CMU this fall, was picked in the 23rd round by the Florida Marlins.

Howard was picked at No. 215 overall while Mills went at No. 290. Both pitchers are juniors. Higgins, a hard-throwing right handed pitcher, was pick No. 703.

Howard went 4-4 for the Chippewas in 2011 and finished with a team-best ERA of 2.78. He started 14 games and had one complete game. In 87 1/3 innings of work he allowed 40 runs (27 earned) on 76 hits while walking 22 and striking out 96. Opponents hit .234 against him.

“It’s an absolutely great feeling and a huge relief,” said Howard, who was expecting to go between the fifth and eighth rounds. “As a kid you dream about playing in the major leagues so it’s pretty unbelievable when the day actually comes.”

Howard also garnered second-team All-Mid-American Conference honors this season. He’s CMU’s highest draft pick since Chad Pleiness was drafted by Toronto in the fifth round of the 2002 draft, going at No. 146.

Mills, a right-handed pitcher, went 2-4 for the University of Michigan this season and finished with an ERA of 5.02.

He appeared in 19 games and had eight starts. For the season Mills pitched 52 innings and allowed 42 runs (29 earned) on 57 hits while walking 30 and striking out 48. Hitters hit .279 against him.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Mills, a 2008 Mt. Pleasant High School gradate. “The draft is the first step towards getting to the major leagues.”

Higgins was also drafted in 2009 as he went to the Texas Rangers in the 47th round at pick No. 1,414. He didn’t sign with the Rangers though.

“It’s fun and exciting to go through,” said Higgins. “I’m in a little better situation to make a decision for myself right now and it will all depend on how me and my family feel about it.”

Howard, Mills and Higgins all said they will weigh the pros and cons of leaving college early with their families before making a decision.

“It all depends on the offer,” said Howard. “I don’t want to leave school but it’s a matter of what they offer.”
