Palmer drafted by Florida Marlins

Wayne County High School graduate Tyler Palmer was drafted in the fourth round Tuesday afternoon by the Florida Marlins. He was the 133rd player taken in the 2011 Major League Baseball draft by the Miami team.

“He was so calm,” said his mother, Jenny Palmer. “We were all jumping and screaming, and he was telling us that we were embarrassing him.”

Palmer had worked out last week for the Marlins and landed where he wanted to play.

“This is the team I wanted to play for,” he said. “It is closer to home, and I am excited and ready to go.”

It was fitting that Palmer learned of his draft status while watching his sister, Maisie, play mite all-star softball in the Lyons Invitational Tournament on Tuesday. Palmer played in many all-star games in this tournament as a youngster as well.

“I’ll report to Jupiter, Fla., but not sure exactly when,” he said. “They start us all out in Single A. Starting date and pay and all that still has to be negotiated out.”

Although he has been a mainstay at short and pitcher for the Wayne County High Yellow Jackets, he also will be looked at as a second baseman for the Marlins.

Palmer is the reigning Region 2-AAAA All-Region Player of the Year. He lettered all four years at WCHS. He has been named to the all-region first team since his freshman year. He also had a scholarship offer to play baseball at the University of Georgia.

He is the son of Gerimi and Jenny Palmer.

Wasnt Toles considered a terrible pick even if he would have signed(i.e. wasnt he projected to go like 10th to 15th round or later)? Either way, this kid always sounded like he would sign until he got njured.

He didn't sign because the Marlins were worried about how bad his injury was. So the Marlins didn't even bother with negotiations.

Tyler actually is not enrolled at UGA. He will probably go to a Jr. College to go back in the draft next year. His injury was his arm which affected his hand. He is hitting homeruns already and actually hitting better than he did in Highschool. He will be back better than before.
