I have no problem really with us drafted 5th Rd Seniors or even Juniors IF its is in the later Rounds(18 to 35)to fill out our minor league rosters. I would rather have a guy like that then sign a FA who is 28 yrs old who played in Double A for 6 years and everyone knows what he is about. The problem I have is the way we go about it when we have them. We draft 23 yr old guys and stick them in the SS Rookie Leagues,then if they dominate we promote them next year to Greensboro or Jupiter where they are already 24 or 25. I would rather have them start there and then move them up fast to see if we got something.(See Nappo this year,sign him for 50k stick him in Jupiter and see what he can do,if he looks good then up to JAX next year)

Also the reason why we can't do a 50/50 split is because there is NO Chance we would even draft a HS guy in the 11th Rd and give him a million bucks. Boston, NY and others do this-instead we draft JUCO guys who usually are 19 or 20 and are willing to sign for half of what a HS kid wants. Check out Bucklin's breakdown,we do it every year.

The talent is not the same but hey I would rather draft a 19 yr old JC pitcher who went 10-3 1.43ERA in the 10th Rd and pay him $100,000 then draft a 18yr old Andrew Paulaskaus or Brandon Barrow in 4th Rd and pay him $450,000

I don't think your irrationality is much different than MK7's either. I don't think I said that.

Also, I think there is a significant difference in College/JUCO in most cases. JUCO guys are 19 years old, 20 years old and in most cases were well thought of prep prospects just one year ago. Much different than the 5th year seniors from marginal programs that you lament (and for the record, I don't think anyone likes those draftees - besides MK7 maybe).

I'd love a draft like the Red Sox. But the Marlins aren't the Red Sox. Or the Phillies. You're talking about the top 10% of draft money spent, and the Marlins will never be at that kind of monetary level (although I agree that small market teams should be investing heavily into the draft as it's the best value in baseball).

I am not asking to be top 5 in draft spending, but they could spend a lot more than they do. Being at the bottom of draft spending year after year is maddening. That $1 million they nonsensically give Wes Helms every year should go into the draft.

I do not completely agree with your comment about this "not being the Red Sox or Phillies", as teams such as the Pirates and Rays among others have shown to be able to spend like they do on the draft(international spending is where the Red Sox blow others out of the water).

I don't like 5th year seniors. I don't even like drafting seniors. In fact, in the later rounds I prefer high school picks. What I hate is high upside undeveloped HS picks in the first few rounds as opposed to slightly lower ceiling but more advanced college picks

Early round high schoolers are no more risky than college players I would argue.

I think maybe the amounts of stars end up being the same but I'd be willing to bet that more complete busts/guys that never reach the majors happen from HSers as opposed to college guys that at least reach the majors for a little while or as a bench player/reliever.

I am talking about the large monetary risk that say, a pitcher from college can bring. They demand the same as a top high school pitcher, possibly more, but have 3 to 4 years of horrible mechanics coming in. With a prep player you can work those mechanics out of them. College guys move faster and are much more likely to implode(ala Strasburg, Prior). Granted, this is not to say a prep player cannot also have bad mechanics, just that they are more likely to be caught in time.

It's not the mechanics, it's the irresponsibility of college coaches.

The head coach at FIU routinely has 19-20 year old starters throwing 130-150 pitches in games.

But the same can be said of high school coaches. If you're trying to compete at your level, you don't worry about the long term effects.

The Pirates have signed Clay Holmes. His asking price was $1.2 million and he's believed to have gotten it–making his bonus an all-time draft record for a ninth-round selection. The previous standard was the $750,000 the Padres gave Jason Middlebrook in 1996.

A Slocomb (Ala.) HS righthander, Holmes has a strong frame (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) and fastball. His slider has its moments but lacks consistency. He had committed to Auburn.
