Anibal Sanchez, recovering from a sprained shoulder, threw 6 2/3 hitless innings in his third rehab start Friday as the Jupiter Hammerheads blanked the Palm Beach Cardinals, 3-0, at Roger Dean Stadium.

The 25-year-old right-hander struck out five and walked two in the longest outing of his current rehab stint. He faced 21 batters and induced nine ground-ball outs and six pop-ups, including three in the sixth inning.

Sanchez worked 3 2/3 frames in his last start on Aug. 2 against Tampa, five days after shutting out Lakeland for three innings. The Marlins have not set a timetable for his return, but Friday's start is the best indication of his improved health since landing on the disabled list three months ago.

Sanchez, who threw a no-hitter for Florida in September 2006, fanned Matt Carpenter for the second out in the seventh and was pulled after reaching his pitch count.

Daniel Jennings came on and struck out Charles Cutler to end the seventh but gave up back-to-back singles to Thomas Pham and Chris Swauger with two outs in the eighth. The Marlins' 2008 ninth-round pick struck out four over the final 2 1/3 innings for his first professional save.

Sanchez was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 4 with a sprained right shoulder, the same injury that sidelined him earlier this season. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on July 12, when Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez indicated the team would not rush the right-hander back to the Majors.

The Venezuelan is 1-4 with a 5.55 ERA and 28 strikeouts over 35 2/3 innings in seven starts with the Marlins this year.

He made another start today.

3.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 45 pitches, 29 strikes.

His 4th inning, he gave up a lead off walk, a homer and a K and then he was pulled. I don't see any mention of him being pulled because of injury and his pitch count is about 1/2 what it was his previous start.

Is it possible he's going to be called up in a couple days?

Florida Marlins right-hander Anibal Sanchez made a rehabilitation start for the Suns, pitching perfectly through the first three innings. After dealing a leadoff walk in the fourth inning, Shaun Cumberland belted a 3-1 pitch into the right field seats to tie the game 2-2. Sanchez struck out the next batter and left the game after 45 pitches, originally scheduled for a maximum of 50.
