  • Martinez, Villanueva Named Marlins Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year

A couple of key contributors to Double-A Jacksonville's Southern League championship team are being recognized by the Marlins organization.

The Marlins on Friday announced that right-hander Elih Villanueva has been tabbed the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and shortstop Ozzie Martinez has been named the Minor League Player of the Year.

The announcement was made by Jim Fleming, the Marlins' vice president of player development and scouting.

Martinez, who participated in the 2010 Futures Game playing for the World Team, was a September callup for Florida.

The 22-year-old infielder batted .302 with a .372 on-base percentage and a .401 slugging percentage in 130 games for the Suns. He scored 90 runs while collecting 28 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 45 RBIs.

He finished tied for first in the Southern League in runs scored and second in hits (156).

An 11th-round pick in 2006, Martinez joined the Marlins on Sept. 19. With Hanley Ramirez and Emilio Bonifacio nursing injuries down the stretch, he appeared in 14 big league games, with 10 starts. He batted .326.

Villanueva, 24, posted a 14-4 record with a 2.26 ERA in 179 innings over 28 starts for the Suns.

On Aug. 15, the right-hander recorded the 11th no-hitter in Suns history. In total, he tossed three shutouts and logged four complete games, and he led the Southern League in ERA.

Villanueva was a 27th-round pick in 2008 out of Florida State.

In 2009 the organizational awards went to pitcher Cristhian Martinez and outfielder Mike Stanton.
