Journeyman minor-leaguer Willie Glen pitched solidly in a spot start, and Brett Carroll, a recent arrival from the Florida Marlins, sparked the offense in the Zephyrs' 3-1 victory against the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday afternoon at Zephyr Field.

Glen (1-1) allowed one run and four hits in five innings to earn his first Triple-A victory.

Carroll, who spent much of this season as a reserve outfielder for the Marlins, had two hits, including a homer that gave the Zephyrs the lead, and scored twice. He's 4-for-9 since being sent to New Orleans for his second stint in Triple-A this season.

"It's fun to get out there and know I'm going to get four at-bats and stick to an approach and have fun," said Carroll, who hit .250 in 88 at-bats in 67 games with Florida.

Glen, who hadn't appeared in a game since pitching two scoreless relief innings July 25 against Memphis, was making his fourth appearance and second start for the Zephyrs. In his first start, he allowed eight runs in five innings against Oklahoma City on July 21.

Glen said he found out Tuesday morning that he would be starting in place of Ryan Tucker, who was scratched because of a sore back.

A home run by So Taguchi, the game's second batter, put Glen behind. But he settled down and kept the count in his favor, throwing strikes on 50 of 74 pitches.

After spending most of the 2005 season and all of the next two seasons in independent baseball, Glen was at Double-A Carolina in the Marlins' organization for most of the 2008 season. In 24 games, including 17 starts, at Carolina, he went 9-4 with a 2.01 ERA. He started this season at Florida's Double-A Jacksonville affiliate, going 2-7 with a 3.69 ERA in 15 games, including 14 starts. In his last two starts at Jacksonville, he didn't allow an earned run in 13 innings, earning a promotion to the Zephyrs.

His performance Tuesday dropped his ERA from 9.72 to 6.75.

"Just an opportunity to pitch, that's all I want," said Glen, a 31-year-old right-hander.

Carroll led off the Zephyrs' first inning with a double to the wall in left center. Gookie Dawkins bunted for a hit, and Carroll scored the tying run when pitcher J.R. Mathes (10-6) threw wildly past first base.

Carroll homered to left with one out in the third, putting the Zephyrs in front 2-1.

New Orleans made the score 3-1 in the fourth.
