  • *LIVE* Jammers Series Report Vs. Muckdogs, 7/17-7/19

The Jammers are playing a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs this weekend in the NYPL, and I'm the Muckdogs Official Scorer this year, so I get a front-and-center seat to all the action. I usually do this a few times a year when I catch Jamestown in Batavia, but I'll now be able to report on all the games. I'll continue to add replies to this throughout the series.

2B Daniel Black (14th Round Pick, 2010): Black was 1-5 with 2 RBIs and a strikeout (swinging). His RBIs came on two ground-outs. He's got a tall and thin frame with an open stance at the plate. He was fed a lot of breaking balls in several of his at-bats.

3B Dallas Poulk (19th Round Pick, 2010): 1-5 with two strikeouts for Poulk. He made a nice snag on a liner in the middle innings, but didn't look particularly impressive at the plate.

RF Marcell Ozuna (Signed as an undrafted free-agent, 2009; spent 2009 with GCL Marlins; also played in Greensboro in 2010): Ozuna was 0-4 with a K (looking), but looked decent at the plate. He has six homers on the year, so he's got some power.

LF Ryan Fisher (15th Round Pick, 2010): Fish was 2-4 with two runs scored and two doubles. He stung the ball in every one of his at-bats and looked really good at the plate, and he sprayed the ball to all fields in his ABs. Made a diving stab for a ball late in the game that he trapped but tried to sell as a catch. Probably looked the best at the dish of any Jammer on the evening. FWIW, Fisher is actually listed as an IF on the Jammers roster.

1B Aaron Senne (10th Round Pick, 2010): Senne went 1-3 and also walked. He showed great agility, jumping high in the air and coming down on the bag to get an errant throw by the pitcher in the first inning.

SS Noah Perio (39th Round Pick, 2009; Spent '09 with GCL Marlins): Perio was 2-4 with a run scored, RBI and a strikeout (looking, on a curve). He wore a right ankle brace at bat and had a live arm in the field; he made a great snag in the hole and throw to first in the 9th.

C Dallas Hord (32nd Round Pick, 2009; Spent '09 with GCL Marlins and Jamestown; also played in Jupiter in 2010): Hord was 1-4 with a double, 2 RBI, and 2 K's (one looking, one swinging). Interestingly, Hord is listed as a switch hitter on the Jammers roster, but batted left his first time up, then right his second time up (both times against a righty pitcher). Many of the Jammers hitters were left-handed tonight. For a catcher, he showed good speed on the basepaths and even tried to bunt for a base hit at one point. Had no problems defensively.

DH Harold Brantley, Jr. (30th Round Pick, 2009; spend '09 with GCL Marlins and Jamestown): Brantley went 1-3 with 2 runs scored and a double, as well as a walk and a K (looking). Showed a good eye at the plate and his double was a flared pop-up that hugged the left field line and he was able to scamper to second base.

CF Brent Keys (17th Round Pick, 2009; spent '09 with GCL Marlins): Keys went 0-3 with 2 K's (both swinging). He also had two sacrifice bunts and was called out on one of them for running out of the baseline to avoid a tag by the first basemen. Give him credit for trying on that one. He also had an outfield assist, nailing a player attempting to go from first to third on a single.

SP Adam Veres (3rd Year Player, signed as free-agent from Cardinals in 2010; spent '09 in A Ball with Quad Cities; also played for Jupiter in 2010): Veres was part of the 2008 NYPL Championship Muckdogs team. Veres is a big guy at 6'3", 225 pounds. 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K was his line on the night. He consistently hit 89-90 on the radar gun for his fastball and had a decent curve and good reflexes on the mound. He has a compact delivery, textbook, with a strong leg drive.

RP Grant Dayton (11th Round Pick, 2010; also played for GCL Marlins in 2010): He threw one inning, with just one walk. He threw the ball with full arm extension and came from a 3/4 arm angle. He walked the first batter he faced and the catcher had to settle him down during the second batter. He ended up getting out of things with a double play.

RP Michael Ojala (25th Round Pick, 2010; also pitched for GCL Marlins in 2010): Ojala went one inning and struck out two Muckdogs. He has a bit of a herky-jerky arm motion as he comes through to the plate. Only saw one curveball from him in the three batters he faced.

RP Jordan Conley (Signed as an undrafted free agent, 2009; also played for Greensboro in 2010): Conley notched his fourth save of the season, walking one in an otherwise uneventful ninth inning. He walked the leadoff man on four pitches. Conley featured a slider in addition to his fastball.

The Jammers lost game two, 6-1. The rubber match is tonight. There were a number of scouts at this game, including ones from the Brewers and Orioles.

3B Danny Black: He played 2B the previous night. Black was 0-4 with two strikeouts, the first being on a curveball (both were swinging). They really worked him low in the strike zone. He made a nice stab defensively on a liner.

DH Dallas Poulk: Poulk was at the hot corner Friday night. He looks a bit like Dan Uggla, minus the muscle (and the bat twitch). Poulk went 0-3 with a walk and two K's (again, both swinging).

1B Aaron Senne: Senne was 1-4 at the dish. I heard their radio announcer mention that Senne has been hot lately, on a 12-game hit streak. His base hit was on a two-strike curveball that didn't fool him.

LF Ryan Fisher: Fisher was 2-4 with a run scored, a double and a K (looking). He's been the most impressive Jammer hitter I've seen in the two games thus far. Apparently, he leads the NYPL in Slugging %.

RF James Wooster (12th Round Pick, 2010): Wooster got the Golden Sombrero: 0-4 with 4 K's (three swinging). He's built well, but looked like he had no clue with a bat in his hands. He doesn't wear batting gloves. He made a running catch on a ball in RF, but made a terrible throw home, even though he was relatively shallow, leading to a run scoring.

2B Noah Perio: Perio was at short on Friday. He went 0-4 with an RBI here.

C Wilfredo Gimenez (Signed as undrafted free-agent, 2007; spent 2009 with GCL Marlins): The roster said he was signed in '07, but I see no stats at the Baseball Cube prior to '09. Could be a typo, since he's listed as 19 years old right now, unless they signed him at 16. He was 1-3 and looked fine behind the plate.

SS Luis Bryan (Acquired in trade with Houston for P Matt Lindstrom; spent time with GCL Marlins as well): Bryan was 0-3 with a K (swinging). He wore high socks and kept his bat on his shoulders until the pitch was made. On his K, he swung and missed on three straight fastballs. When he did connect, he had a couple of deep fly-outs.

CF Brent Keys: Keys was 0-3 with a K (looking). He misread a flyball to center, allowing it to drop for a hit. He does look smaller than his height and weight indicate. They worked him away in his at-bat in the 7th.

SP Luis Chirinos (Signed as undrafted free agent, 2006; spent 2009 with GCL Marlins and Greensboro): Chirinos got roughed up, going 2.2 innings, giving up 7 hits, five runs (all earned), two walks and one strikeout. This was a rarity, as he has been quite good this year. He had the fourth-best ERA in the NYPL coming into the game. He seems to explode out of his windup and has confidence in his curve, which he threw on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded early on. He did show a tendency to overthrow. He hit 91 on the radar gun for his fastball. From the stretch, the righty's front leg seems a bit stiff. Most of his outs were fly-ball outs, and he did give up a home run.

RP Isaac Morales (34th Round Pick, 2009; spent 2009 with GCL Marlins; has also pitched for Jupiter in 2010): Morales, a lefty, went 2.1 innings, gave up two hits, and struck out two. He comes from low three-quarters, almost side-arm. He has a Pinto-like slinging of the arm when he pitches, especially noticeable to lefties. He steps off to the side as well when he delivers home. His curve registered at 74 on the gun and it looks like he'd be tough for left-handed hitters to pick up.

RP Andrew Kainer (Signed as undrafted free agent, 2009; spent '09 with GCL Marlins): Kainer went 2 innings, giving up one run (earned) on one hit and two walks. His fastball was clocked at 88 MPH.

RP Michael Brady (24th Round Pick, 2009): Brady, a converted IF, went one scoreless inning, walking one. He hasn't given up a run in 11.1 innings this year. He goes from the windup and comes almost straight over the top.

The Jammers dropped game three, and the series, in controversial fashion tonight, 1-0. Manager Dave Berg was ejected in the 8th inning after a ball hit down the left field line by Harold Brantley was ruled foul by the home plate umpire, despite kicking up what appeared to be chalk. It would've been at least a triple, possibly an inside-the-park HR. Berg was irate enough to throw his helmet (he was coaching third) into the dugout in anger before he went in.

Only one or two scouts on hand tonight. Also of note, Minor League Pitching Coordinator Wayne Rosenthal was in the stadium, clad in Marlins uniform (#35 for those wondering). He played some catch with Michael Brady in the bullpen before the game and also talked with Jammers pitching coach John Birtwell. He was likely there to watch the first professional start for Alan Oaks, which he did from the dugout.

RF Harold Brantley: Brantley went 1-4 at the plate. He had a good battle in his first at-bat before grounding out. He showed bunt, but whiffed on it in his second at-bat. He was also picked off at first by a lefty pitcher for Batavia in the 5th inning.

SS Luis Bryan: Bryan was also 1-4 with a strikeout (looking). Lots of flyouts and strikeouts for the Jammers this series.

LF Ryan Fisher: 0-2 with 2 BB's and a strikeout (looking) was the line for Fisher. Thought he and the other Jammers would've teed off against Kevin Siegrist, who has struggled this year (came into the game with a 9.00 ERA). But many of the Jammers, including Fisher, bat left-handed, which could've been a factor. Fisher did draw a walk against a top closer in the league, Jose Rada.

CF Marcell Ozuna: Ozuna went 0-4 with 3 K's (two looking). He was tossed in the ninth after getting caught looking at a curveball and arguing with the ump. He also did not like the strike three call earlier in the game on a K. On that AB, he swung and missed on two changes, then got caught looking at a fastball.

1B Aaron Senne: Senne was 1-4 with a K (looking). Senne singled on a curveball to keep his hitting streak alive. He also made a diving stop of a ground ball in the second inning.

DH Noah Perio: 1-3 was Perio at the dish. At 18 years old, he's the youngest player on the Jammers roster.

C Dallas Hord: Hord was 0-2 with a walk. He also grounded out twice.

2B Dallas Pouk: Poulk was 0-3 with 2 K's. He made an error in the first inning, trying to transfer the ball from his glove to his hand to get a double-play started. He showed the ability to get out of the box quickly when batting.

3B Aury Diaz (Signed as undrafted free agent in '07; spent '09 with GCL Marlins): Diaz has a slender build and plays third base and second base for the Jammers. He was 1-3 with an infield single in this game.

SP Alan Oaks (8th Round Pick, 2010; also played with GCL Marlins this year): As stated above, this was Oaks' first pro start. He has a textbook, smooth delivery and comes overhand to the plate. He struggled in the first inning, pitching from behind and giving up the one run (though his defense did not help him: the committed two errors). He did a solid job covering first base a couple times. His fastball seemed to sit in the 88-90 range. His line: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO.

RP Holden Sprague (28th Round Pick, 2009; spent '09 with GCL Marlins and Jammers): Sprague relieved Oaks and I couldn't tell at first, because they look almost identical on the mound, in body and delivery. He went 2 innings, giving up 2 hits and 2 K's. Not sure what he was throwing, but I saw 83 and 84 a couple times on the gun.

RP Kenneth Toves (21st Round Pick, 2010): Toves went one inning, with no other stats. He pitched from the wind-up and twists his body a bit as he lifts his leg to deliver the ball.

RP Jeremy Heatley (22nd Round Pick, 2010; also spent time this year with GCL Marlins): Heatley finished the game, going one inning, giving up a double and striking out two. His curve was clocked at 76 MPH and he brings his knee up high on his windup.

The Jammers are next in Batavia on July 31st.
