  • GCL Update

Now that a few semi-interesting fellows have a handful of an AB, I figured I'd do an update.

    Wood:
A few interesting recent draftees with a mix of some DSL guys and senior citizens are performing adequately enough. Small sample size warnings should be considered.

    Marquise Cooper: CF
3rd round fast man from the 09 draft, performed fairly miserably last year in the GCL. So, he got to return. Still has a non-existent hit tool, as he's just not making much contact and when he does it's usually on the ground (58.1 GB%, and only 9.7 LD%). He is fast and he's already stolen 4 bases this year (only caught once). He has also shown some improved plate discipline in his 45 AB, as he's drawn 13 BB, compared to 14 SO. Still 18 years old and will be all year.

    10/44 - 0 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 13 BB, 14 SO
    Slashes: .227/.424/.341/.765

    Jobduan Morales: C
Drafted out of Puerto Rico in the 9th round as part of the 2009 draft class. Coming into the draft he was one of, if not the best bats on the island. Not many believe he can stay behind the plate too much longer, but the bat might play up anyways. He's also played at both corner infield spots. He's got patience and pop, so he's an interesting guy to watch moving forward. 19 years old.

    11/35 - 2 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 6 BB, 4 SO, 1 SB
    Slashes: .314/.415/.429/.844

    Viosergy Rosa: 1B
Don't know much about the guy yet. 29th rounder out of a JUCO in Texas this year. Only a handful of AB so far, but it's been impressive so far. Just turned 20 last month.

    5/18 - 2 2B, 1 HR, 5 BB, 5 SO,
    Slashes: .278/.500/.556/.1.056

    Kentrell DeWitt: CF
19 year old out of Southeastern CC was taken in the 13th round this year. Big time athlete. Speed and power, despite his smallish frame. Super raw, so if anything ever happens for him, it will probably take awhile, but there are some raw skills on display. A friend of mine went to see some complex league play, and said that DeWitt was the most athletic guy on the field. Just as fast as Cooper, but with serious upper body strength.

    7/32 - 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 BB, 11 SO, 2 SB (1 CS)
    Slashes: .219/.306/.375/.681

    Mayobanez Soto: 3B
Signed as a 17 year old out of the DR, he only played one full season in the DSL before coming stateside. Once again, he's a guy with only a few AB, but they are worth noting. Oh, and he just hit another homer. The stats below won't reflect today's result thus far, so he really has 2 HR. 19 years old.

    7/21 - 2 2B, 1 HR, 2 BB, 6 SO,
    Slashes: .333/.417/.571/.988

There are some other DSL guys who have been signed for a few years like Pedro Mendoza, Yefri Perez, and Rony Peralta that aren't giving a lot of performance. Also some older dudes who are performing McConkey (.966 OPS, 21 year old 1B) and Corsaletti (.910 OPS, 27 year old 1B/C).

It's basically pointless to update the arms, but I will a bit later.

Just wanted to add this guy to this watch list, as there isn't much interesting in the way of arms down on the complex league.

    Jheyson Manzueta: RHP
I wrote this about him a week or so ago...

I've got a second hand mini-report on this guy. Clean delivery except for an inconsistent release point which causes him to be a bit wild. But he's got a good arm (has room to add some strength) with a solid-above average fastball (sits 91-93), and has an above average-plus slider. That's it. He's 20 years old and needs to learn to pitch, but the stuff is there (proven by his 25 K and 8 H in 17.2 IP)
    He's still dealing.

    21.2 IP, 12 H (0 HR), 10 BB, 28 SO, 1.19 GO:AO

Also. Marquise Cooper is quietly having at the very least an adequate season, especially as of late.

    Last 10:

    .313/.405/.344/.749 (10 for 32, 1 2B, 5:9 BB/K, 5 SB)

    Season:
    .279/.417/.368/.785

He has no power, but he gets on base and he's fast. I can deal with that.
