Left-hander Sean West could join Florida Marlins rotation soon
by Joe Capozzi
Left-hander Sean West allowed one run in seven innings today for Class AAA New Orleans in the latest of a series of impressive starts.
West is doing well enough that Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez mentioned him by name today when discussing options for Florida’s rotation after the All Star break.
West had been out with back problems until last month, and six of West’s last eight starts have been for five or more innnings. He has gone at least six innings in four starts. He is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA, with 11 walks and 35 strikeouts in 40 innings.
“That’s pretty much what he has been doing lately and his tempo is pretty quick,” Rodriguez said about West’s line score today.
“He’s throwing strikes, holding runners. We need West to show that has confidence in his pitches again and confidence in being out there and competing and he has been showing that lately.”
Rodriguez said it’s looking like Alex Sanabia will start Sunday, in place of demoted right-hander Chris Volstad. “I think he deserves a chance to see what he can do,” Rodriguez said.
The only thing that could knock Sanabia out is if he is needed to pitch in relief over the next three days.
Rodriguez also said he’d like to keep the Marlins rotation in its current order once the second half of the season starts July 16. But he said that could depend on how many innings Josh Johnson pitches Tuesday in the All Star Game.
