      Marlins' Rogers throws GCL one-hitter

It took a little assistance from Mother Nature, but Jared Rogers pitched a one-hit shutout in his first professional start Saturday.

The 22-year-old right-hander faced only two batters over the minimum as the Gulf Coast League Marlins blanked the Mets, 3-0, in a rain-shortened six-inning game.

Rogers (3-0) was selected by Florida in the 36th round of last month's Draft out of Rice University, where he led the team in wins (8), complete games (2) and innings pitched (87) as a senior.

Saturday's matinee was his first start after seven relief appearances, but he had no trouble extending his scoreless streak to 19 2/3 innings. Rogers retired the first eight batters before hitting Randoll Santana. After setting down the next seven Mets, he gave up a one-out double to Santana in the sixth.

Working with a runner in scoring position for the only time, the 6-foot-6 Texan kept the shutout intact by retiring Donnie Tabb and Tillman Pugh on groundouts.

The Marlins sent two men to the plate in the bottom of the sixth before play was halted.

Rogers lowered his ERA to 0.87 and his batting average against to .194. Over 20 2/3 innings, he's given up two runs on 14 hits and one walk while striking out 14.
