Andrew Toles, son of former UT linebacker Alvin Toles, has committed to play baseball for Tennessee next year.

Toles is a left-handed-batting outfielder with good defensive skills from Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, Ga.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Toles is also an aggressive base-runner who had 26 stolen bases as a junior, while hitting .450.

Andrew Toles plays summer ball for the East Cobb Braves. He projects to be drafted next summer. How high will depend on his senior year at Sandy Creek.

His father, Alvin Toles, was a hard-hitting linebacker at Tennessee from 1981-84. He played several years for the New Orleans Saints in the NFL.

Alvin Toles, whose son Andrew was a star outfielder for Sandy Creek, said prospects have a lot of issues to consider, but a significant signing bonus, if the player is picked high enough, can erase questions. His son has signed with Tennessee.

“At the end of the day, is it life-changing money that the big league club is offering?” said Toles, a former linebacker at Tennessee whose son is projected to go in the top five rounds. “If I was a parent in this situation, I would ask, is he going to put the bonus money to good use while he plays in the minor leagues? If you got a plan and get the dollar amount you want that can change your life, you look hard at signing with a team.

“Then again, it’s everything to have that scholarship. He would love to play for Tennessee. That’s our home school. He would love to play Major League Baseball, too, but they understand I attended Tennessee.”

Sandy Creek High is becoming a pro factory. Toles throw 91 from the OF and runs 6.49 in the sixty. He is extremely quick. Runs the bases at pro speeds. Very quick hand but still raw at the plate. Pro hitting instructor will clean him up and he will fly through the minors. Professional athlete. Dad played in NFL. Definite draft 2010

Andrew Toles, the man every scout was there to see, was the leadoff hitter for the opposing squad. About 15-20 scouts showed up in anticipation of what they might see from Toles on the night against a quality opposing pitcher. He stepped in to start the game, and then he promptly punched the ball down the left field line for a hit that he stretched into a double. There wasn’t an opportunity to really clock him down the line to first base, but on that double, with a wide turn, he clocked in at 4.24 seconds to first, an average number even with the turn, showing what kind of speed he has. Toles eventually came around to score in the inning, and Triplett and company didn’t seem that impressive against Jaye. That run turned out to be the only run scored until the top of the sixth inning, so Toles’ ability to stretch his hit into a double turned out to be pretty critical for the makeup of the game.
