I mean, they couldn't know Dean was gonna go AWOL and Smolinski was a solid prospect who just didn't pan out. Bonifacio gave us a total of 3.5 WAR for ~3.4m. Olsen and Hammer gave WAS a total of 4.4 WAR for 11.35m. WAS most definitely got a better deal out of it (Hammer was worth 5.5 WAR for 7.55m, Olsen was just super terrible), but that's not really a deal to complain about.
