  • Straw Poll: Inserting Cup System into Current Format

This is just a straw to gauge the interest of inserting a Cup system into the current format. It has no standing and a yes vote does not endorse everything in the paragraph below.

Example of how it would work:

2008 teams would be ranked using 2007 records for seeding in each league. The tournament begins with the season and occurs when each team in the bracket plays each other on the regular season schedule. The winner would have some sort of perk such as a simple title, $5 million in cap for the following season, a top prospect, etc. etc. etc.

There could also be a Cup for the worst teams in the leagues.

Any example of how this would have worked in 2007: http://www.soflamarlins.com/showpost...8&postcount=33

I never said I was for the cup system. Split season, yes. I just think they're is too many different ways that teams can fall through the cracks an not be in either the cup race or the playoff race.

Um. Everyone in the Teal League would participate in either Cup and two teams in the Black League would participate in both.

How is that falling through the cracks?

And what do the other teams in the black league compete for? The title of who sucks the worst?

I already explained the concept as to how both tournaments in each league would work. I am not going to waste my time explaining it again.

Number of teams that do not participate in the tournament(s): 0

I just really dislike this idea.

I just don't really care for a system that says, at least in my head, "you suck and can't hang with the big boys so we're going to give you your own little thing to play for". I'm also not sure that the prizes for winning would be worth it.

That's fine. But to make the point that teams would "fall through the cracks" despite all teams being involved in a tournament makes zero sense.

Yeah I'm sure a crappy team like yours wouldn't want a free top prospect from the league. Silly me.

If it truly doesn't affect scheduling, I'm all for adding some excitement to the league.

I am vehemently opposed to anything that alters scheduling, or playoff systems.

I realize that what we have now is not perfect, but at the same time, I think that we are both asked for, and strive to achieve, realism. We're not handing out 100 ratings, we're not offering free ratings bump ups or anything else. Baseball is an exercise in patience in both real life and in fictitious leagues, anything else I feel is too much of a bastardization of the game of baseball, which is what we're trying to sim now like a bunch of nerds so we can feel like we're qualified to run a team .

Let me just clarify, would all teams start the Cup at the same time? Because, what it sounded like to be before was that the first cup would be the teams with the bet records competing early in the season and the teams with the worst records would compete late in the season. If this is the ase, there is still a chance that a team near the .500 mark all year would not participate in either cup. That why I said that some teams could fall through the cracks.

If you had read the first post you would have seen the bolded line about none of the current proposals being final and everything being on the table. The point is to get the conversation started towards implementing something or nothing.

I know you joined us late but my team was in first place in our division for the first half of the season and I finished right behind the two wild card teams.

I would need to know more about how these would work before I approved of any decisions about this. Maybe I'm just not understanding how everything has been explained.

Another thought on this, what would happen in the situation like Sandro was in this year?He was low enough after the first half of the season tht he would have been in the bottom group fighting for the prospect but then rebounded in the second half to make the playoffs. So we could conceivably have a team win both the prospect and the championship title? If that could happen, wouldn't teams just try to tank the first half so they could get into the prospect race and the turn it on to try to get into the playoffs?
