          • HOUSTON — Five days before the non-waiver Trade Deadline, and Giancarlo Stanton remains not available. This is no big revelation to those around the Marlins, but it remains the most asked question to those on the outside.

Occasionally, the Marlins will field a call from a club hoping to hear otherwise. The answer is always an emphatic — not available.

Five days before the deadline, the Marlins are hoping to become buyers. Winning four of five to open their road trip has raised optimism and hope they can make a playoff push.

A starting pitcher is on their shopping list, but the urgency could subside if Brad Hand and Jacob Turner reach their potential in a hurry. Hand is doing so, coming off an impressive two straight wins of throwing at least seven innings.

At Minute Maid Park on Friday night, Hand threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings in Miami’s 2-0 win over the Astros.

Turner will start on Sunday at Houston.

Adding an experienced arm to the rotation could benefit the entire staff, as well as energize the clubhouse. But the deal has to make sense in order to pull the trigger.

Brad Penny, currently at Triple-A New Orleans, is another option in his attempt to return to the big leagues for the first time since 2012.

Pitching aside, the Marlins also have made finding a regular second baseman a high priority. Ideally, they’d like a speedy middle infielder to hit at the top of the order, either first or second.

The candidate doesn’t necessarily have to be big league proven. Someone at Double-A or above and is considered big league ready would fit the profile.

The way the team has trended the past week has increased the club’s interest in buying.
            Joe Frisaro

I feel they are just going to stay pat. They will likely say that Turner and Hand have solidified their rotation, and Valdespin is their guy at 2B.

Any ideas who can be had to play at 2B for us? I thought they wanted a young club controlled pitcher. Now they want a vet?

            • Adding a shortstop should be the highest priority they have. They have a competent, if not spectacular, second basemen already in the system.

                • The Red Sox are “close” to trading starting pitcher Jake Peavy to an unknown National League team, Jen Royle of the Boston Herald tweets. (She notes, however, that “[l]ots of things need to happens before this gets done.”) That NL team is not the Cardinals, who have lately been connected to Peavy. (The Red Sox had reportedly been scouting the Cardinals’ system in case Peavy trade discussions advanced.) The Braves have also reportedly been involved in Peavy trade talks, and Royle guesses that the Giants or Brewers could also be possibilities.

Peavy has a 4.72 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 124 innings this season. He is making $14.5MM this season before heading to free agency this winter.

                  • That article is funny because when you start reading it you think we may be actually looking to add a player of substance.

Then you quickly realize our playoff push is Brad Hand and Jacob Turner (who are pitching WAY above their heads) sprinkled with Brad Penny. Lololololol

With The McGression in full swing now, it's not just possible but likely that the Marlins don't get 2 WAR from the infield the rest of the season.
                      --------------------
Marlins are 6th in WAR from the outfield combined.

                      25th from 1B, 24th from 2B, 28th from SS, 14th from 3B, 13th from C.

If you only count their contributions as on defense and at the plate, Henderson Alvarez and Jacob Turner are 6th and 8th on the team in WAR, respectively.

                        • Comparing it to what the Giants gave up, it would have taken Nicolino and Wittgren to get Peavy.

                            • Stanton is going nowhere so any rumor on him is BS

As for the rest of the guys, don't look for anyone except Mike Dunn to be dealt. Loria thinks we can get a WC especially the way we are playing.

They arent looking for 33 yr old vets-they are looking for younger guys who have/are playing in the majors and club controlled(Alex Cobb/Nick Franklin/Guys like that)

As for Cishek, the Pitt trade is NOT a rumor. They like Cishek and have stuff we like in Hanson and Glasnow. IF we trade him I could see us doing a deal with them with either Hanson OR Glasnow in the package. If we wait till the Winter,Cishek will still bring alot from Pitt/Boston/whoever else needs a closer which is why we are not in a rush to deal him.

A name to watch is Asdrubal Cabrera. There is some interest from us however nothing discussed.
