  • he bought the Marlins for $158.5m and Forbes values them now at $500m

factoring in the current value of the dollar versus when he bought the team and he'd probably make about $300m true value profit if he sold the team for that

        • Hugg makes the real point. There's a very very good chance the Marlins are going to lose money this season. The real value for Loria is getting that new TV deal that'll increase the team's value even more than it currently stands. He'll sell the team for around $600 million to $700 million and that's where he'll profit.

And to answer bobbob's post, no, it is most definitely not a viable business model. Loria cares about winning, but it's always been about the long term investment rather than the short term profits.

          • 7. Rafael Soriano, RHP, free agent — Coming up with bullpen help has been a tedious process for the Marlins, who were in on Rodriguez before he re-signed with Milwaukee. On the market is Soriano, and it appears the Marlins have interest. We wrote a few weeks back that Soriano would be a good fit for the Jays because of his AL East success, but so far they have stayed away.

            • Why more bullpen arms?

Oh, and every pro sports team loses money. That comes with the territory and if the prospect of not turning a profit every single year is too much to bare, then you can't afford owning a franchise. Maybe that new TV deal will work out to be better. Or maybe that'll be the moment Loria sells. Who knows?

              • Agreed.

We all know Loria sweats the money.

If you sweat the money you have no business owning a major sport franchise.

They want another BP arm so they can trade Cishek when they get an offer they like and still have a exp closer.

The FO doesn't wanna trade Cishek then have to try Capps,Ramos,Morris or Ramsey at closer. They want to be able to deal him whenever and then have Soriano or KRod(which is why they wanted him) to be the closer

                  • But the whole point of trading Cishek is because he's gonna make $6+ million. It's kinda defeating the purpose if you're signing another closer at $6 million to trade Cishek, especially considering that he's better than both K-Rod and Soriano.

This would be a pretty stupid thought process.

                      • This team is spending entirely too much money on the bullpen.

                        • Where else can it spend money? It's not like there are a bunch of great position players available. Don't you want them to spend more money to construct a better team? Because if they didn't I know someone would complain about that too.

                          • If it's 1-year deals I don't care how much more money they spend on the bullpen.

I disagree here. While they'd probably be fine just promoting Capps/Dyson to the bullpen and letting whoever close, getting a K-Rod/Soriano type would certainly maintain the depth without Cishek.

I don't think this is a "money" thing. This would be, they can probably get a really good young infielder for Cishek and can immediately replace Cishek with a veteran and not expected production from a 1-2 year player. Granted, that guy for Cishek probably doesn't start in 2015, but they'd have someone to groom longterm at, ideally, 1B/3B. Maybe even an injury call up this year. All depends who it would be and if it's worth the downgrade from Cishek to whoever. My guess is, they could get someone pretty good and make it worth it.

                              ---

Bullpen is $14 million in 2015, and $6.65 of that is Cishek. I don't think this is a drastic overpay. I think the only problem is they really don't need Crow and could use Capps/Dyson for that spot. Hard to criticize them though when they didn't know they would get getting Phelps later in the offseason though. Ditching Crow in a trade would save them $1.5 million.

Well the offer they made to KRod was 2/10. So just say 5 million for a closer and if they would have gotten him then could have traded Cishek for prospects.

The issue with Cishek is he isn't some 23 yr old guy,he will be 29 and is gonna cost ALOT more in the coming years. What u gonna give a 30 yr old closer who throws like that a 5 yr deal??

The thought process was/is-sign a vet cheap and when a team makes an offer for Cishek that we like trade him and install the vet as a closer. They actually were talking a deal with Toronto for Cishek but since no KRod that fell apart

Crow is a decent arm to have especially at that price. He could setup,MR,LR,or even possibly spot start

On top of that is wasn't like Crow cost us anything great-Flynn was a AAAA arm and Redman was picked up off the trash pile
